Continue ReadingThe Wilmington Play-by-Play Classic took place at the 76ers Fieldhouse in the heart of Delaware. 8 games were originally scheduled, but the team and individual performances more than made up for the cancellations. An underrated part of the event was the number of 2024 players (current sophomores) who had huge impacts for their teams.
Luke Boyd Luke Boyd CG Archbishop Ryan | 2022 State PA | 6’1 G 2022 Archbishop Ryan (PA)
The Raiders initially trailed Central Dauphin. Then Luke got going. He shook loose twice after cutting hard to the basket off screens. Later on, the Raiders took the lead after Luke drained a 3 running off a pin-down on back-to-back plays. His shooting energized his squad and he cemented the win with a highlight jam on a fast-break. Boyd finished with 19 points and 4 threes.
Donovan Hill Donovan Hill 6'7" | SF Central Dauphin | 2022 PA | 6’8 F 2022 Central Dauphin (PA)
The Niagra-signee moved effortlessly on both ends. Hill pulled the trigger from three over smaller defenders, totaling 19 points in the contest against Archbishop Ryan. On defense, he flipped back-and-forth from the strong side to the weak side. Donovan bodied up Sorber from AR, not allowing easy shots. He also jabbed at Sorber from the help position and blocked shots.
Quin Berger | 6’1 G 2022 Westtown (PA)
Not the most high profile player on the court, Quin had a major impact on the game. St. Bens was in it the entire time but Berger made clutch basket after clutch basket to keep them at bay. He knocked down 3 triples, finished through contact at the rim, and blanketed his man on defense. His 13 points and his contributions that didn’t show up in the box score were invaluable.
Ty-Laur Johnson Ty-Laur Johnson 6'1" | PG St. Benedict's | 2023 #134 Nation NY | 6’0 G 2023 St. Benedicts (NJ)
This kid has a ton of craft to his game. He was patient when running give and goes, choosing the perfect moment to pull the trigger from three, which he made three of. His real bag came off the bounce. He was able to draw fouls and execute extension finishes to score around Lively II from Westtown. Ty-laur scored 21 points in the loss.
Ahmad Nowell Ahmad Nowell 6'0" | PG Imhotep Charter | 2024 State #36 Nation PA | 6’0 G 2024 Imhotep (PA)
It was not the volume that Ahmad scored at that was impressive, it was how he scored. He’s not the most quick-twitch athlete, but he was able to use his strength when driving to take the spots he wanted on the way to the rim. Nowell also showed the willingness to shoot, making 1 three. He totaled 13 points in the win against Neumann-Goretti.
Robert Wright III Robert Wright III 6'0" | PG Montverde Academy (FL) | 2024 State #35 Nation FL | 6’0 G 2024 Neumann-Goretti
Rob put together a good all-around performance in what turned out to be a bar fight disguised as a basketball game. He hit three shots from deep and converted speed to power as he pressured the rim. Even when Imhotep went zone, Rob was able to get into the middle and collapse the defense. The first-year starter ended the game with 16 points.
Daniel Skillings Daniel Skillings 6'5" | SG Roman Catholic | 2022 State PA | 6’6 W 2022 Roman Catholic (PA)
Roman was without their starting point guard and Skillings stepped up big with 27 points. The wing scorer was nearly impossible to stop on drives. When he got advantages on offense, he used his combination of flexibility and strength to bend around defenders to get to the hoop. Skillings also attacked the glass to get put backs.
Isaiah Hynson | 6’4 G 2024 Salesianum (DE)
He couldn’t deliver his team the win, but Hynson gave them a fighting chance as the engine of their offense. Isaiah used his size to his advantage with post ups and spin moves to create space for himself and find passing windows. He scored 11 points and dished out several assists. High and mid major coaches should take notice.
