Union opened up their home schedule for the 2021-2022 season with a date against conference opponent Sapulpa. The Redhawks would jump out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter and were never really in danger as they would roll to a 91-45 victory. The Redhawks had a lot go right for them as they shot nearly 60 percent from the floor. They utilized their size advantage and got plenty of points near the basket, outscoring Sapulpa 44-16 in the paint.
Union would lead 38-21 at halftime and they absolutely exploded in the second half. They outscored the Chieftains 53-24 in the second half and shot over 70 percent as a team. Junior Trent Pierce Trent Pierce 6'6" | SF Union | 2023 State #73 Nation OK led all scorers with 26 points in the win. He was joined in double figures by sophomores Chris Mason and Cedric Dixon. Mason also finished with a double double along with Pierce with 10 rebounds.
As a team, Union looked like a promising squad in Class 6A. They are currently ranked #7 in the OSSAA coaches rankings but are going to be a team that improves dramatically over the course of the season. They started two juniors and three sophomores on Tuesday night so this is a young team that will not only be a threat later this season, but one of the best in the state next year. They have good guard play, long forwards who are just as comfortable on the block as they are on the perimeter and outstanding athleticism. This will be a fun team to watch.
Sapulpa was led by Jacolby Record with 14 points but fell to Union in their season opener and dropped to 0-1 on the season. Union bounced back from two losses to Texas teams with the win on Tuesday night. Both teams now take the week off before taking the floor on Tuesday of next week as Union travels to Bixby while Sapulpa travels to Owasso.
TURNING POINT
Union closed out the first quarter on a 6-0 run and continued the run into the second quarter to go up by double digits. From there, Sapulpa would never really threaten as Union would get their first win of the season and Sapulpa would drop to 0-1. Both teams will have a week off before they return to the court on December 14th. Both teams will be hitting the road as Union goes to Bixby while Sapulpa will travel to Owasso.

to show why he’s arguably the best junior prospect in the state. Pierce helped Union jump out to their 16-8 lead with 9 first quarter points to lead to a double double on the evening. He would finish with 26 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Pierce was efficient and smooth on the floor and was showcasing his skills at every level on the offensive side of the floor. Pierce finished 8-13 shooting and was also a threat on the defensive side of the floor. As we said, this Union team is incredibly long and athletic, especially on the defensive end of the floor and Pierce is a problem when he’s active on defense.
