Continue ReadingInterstate 20 was busy with basketball action during the second weekend in December. Along with college games like ULL-La Tech, there were several tournaments along the interstate. Parkway, West Ouachita, Southwood, and Wossman all had hardwood action with various teams, both north and south, participating. From the weekend of play, I will look at some top performers from the weekend on I-20.
G | Kleb Allen | ’22
Haughton guard Kleb Allen (aka KJ) had a very good 24 hours at the Parkway tournament against BTW (Shreveport) and West Monroe. In a tight game with the Lions, he tied with a game high of 14 and buried big shots from three and the mid-range down the stretch. Against West Monroe, he scored 13 second half points en route to the Bucs upset win. His offense and defense was a main cog in both wins.
G | Aidan Anding Aidan Anding 6'0" | SG Ruston | 2025 State LA | ’25
The Bearcats left Southwood late on Saturday night with a win and Anding had plenty to do with it. The Ruston freshman had a game high 15 points being a proficient shooter from the corner three. His two third quarter threes gave Ruston a spark which propelled them to taking the lead. His defense on the Southwood guards was also a key in Ruston securing their victory at the Ranch.
F | Kamron Coleman Kamron Coleman 6'8" | PF Wossman | 2023 State LA | ’23
Coleman was a dominant figure during the Wossman blowout win of St. Helena. His 20 point double-double saw him rebound the ball very well on the offensive and defensive boards. Catching the ball in the paint has been something Coleman has worked diligently on since the summer. He did that much better on Saturday. This game showed the bounds of potential he has as a paint presence going forward.
F | Laythan Delaney Laythan Delaney 6'4" | PF Haughton | 2023 State LA | ’23
Delaney, the 6’3″ lefty power forward definitely showed his worth in the Haughton victories during the Parkway tournament. He had 14 points and the game sealing free throws in the quarters win over BTW. His nine second half points were big in Haughton winning in the semis over West Monroe. Delaney is an inside force and seems to always get to his left hand to finish in the paint. He will be important for Haughton’s success going forward.
G | Mack Jones | ’22
Jones made an impression on me earlier this season as a senior point guard. As the Neville floor general, the 6’0″ guard always seems to make the right play. In the Tigers win over Jonesboro-Hodge at West Ouachita, Jones was at it again. He scored 15 points (nailing two treys) and got into the teeth of the Tigers defense several times. Jones is a solid leader and part of the Neville trio that did all of the scoring in their weekend victory.
G | Rayshun McCullar Rayshun McCullar 6'1" | PG Huntington | 2022 State LA | ’22
McCullar has begun the season like a man on a mission and his game against Southwood was an example of that. He was held scoreless in the first stanza but went on to score 25 in the last three periods leading the Raiders to victory. He shot the ball well from deep and the mid-range and his attacks to the rim were decisive. McCullar knows his way around the court and showed it in the Raider win.
F | Braylan McNeal Braylan McNeal 6'6" | SF Ruston | 2023 State LA | ’23
McNeal is one of those players that fills the stats sheet on a nightly basis. His late Saturday night against Southwood was a perfect example of that. He only scored five points. However, his nine rebounds, four blocks, and two steals helped propel a defensive effort by the Bearcats that held Southwood to 41 points. McNeal even had three assists on the night. His game is so multi-dimensional.
G | Zion Nelson | ’22
The Haughton senior guard was vital to the Haughton win over West Monroe with his three point shooting. His four three pointers were instrumental in the Bucs building a 15 point before they held on at the end for a dramatic finish. His defensive effort in helping hold senior Dakota Gasca Dakota Gasca 5'9" | CG West Monroe | 2022 State LA under 20 points was huge as well. While Nelson may be 5’8″, he played huge for his team in this win.
Interstate 20 will be abuzz again this weekend. Along with the big Louisiana Tech-LSU game in Bossier, tournaments/classics will be held in Minden, Ruston, and Rayville. Hopefully we will see plenty of performances during those games as we did from the aforementioned players.
