San Marcos went 3-1 in the Gold Division, winning the consolation championship. Orange Glen bounced back from two early losses with two straight victories to close out play in the Orleans Select Division. And St. Augustine, the region’s top team, went 1-3 in the tournament’s top field, the Platinum Division.
Here are some of the standouts from the teams.
Jurian Dixon Jurian Dixon 6'4" | SG St. Augustine | 2023 State #247 Nation CA-S , 6-4 2023 G, St. Augustine
Dixon has emerged as one of the West Coast’s fastest rising prospects after a strong week in Vegas. The area of his game where he’s shown the most growth is in his three-point shooting. When given space, Dixon has a smooth (albeit slow) release and is becoming increasingly accurate off the wing. Add that to his already advanced midrange and close-range scoring package, you have one of the better scoring combo guards in his class.
Evan Record, 5-8 2022 G, San Marcos
Record is San Marcos’ security blanket. Whenever they need a big three, they run sets to get Record open off of pin-down or flare action, and the diminutive guard delivers almost all the time. But his game isn’t just confined to shooting. He’s a crafty scorer off the bounce and a scrappy on-ball defender who plays with maximum effort.
Devon Arlington Devon Arlington 6'3" | PG San Marcos | 2022 State CA-S , 6-3 2022 G, San Marcos
Arlington was banged up this week, but helped San Marcos shake off an opening round loss to Bingham and win the Gold Division consolation championship. A physical, downhill guard who outmuscles defenders to the rim, Arlington uses his dribble penetration to set up open shots for the Knights shooters or easy scoring opportunities for the team’s bigs. Defensively, he gets overshadowed at times because he plays with an elite defender in Max McCall Max McCall 6'3" | SF San Marcos | 2022 State CA-S , but his physicality and footwork allow him to frustrate opposing guards.
MJ Madore, 6-0 2023 G, Orange Glen
The smooth combo guard is rapidly becoming one of San Diego’s sleeper prospects in 2023. A long, crafty guard who has a nice mid-range pull-up game to go along with consistent spot-up shooting from deep and some crafty finishing ability around the basket off the bounce. Ball control (weak hands, turnover prone when attacking the basket) is the next area where he’ll need to get more consistent, but he quickly became one of my favorites during Orange Glen’s 2-2 run here.
Justin Torres, 6-0 2022 G, Orange Glen
Torres came off the bench and lit teams up consistently all weekend. He’s nearly automatic when his feet are set on either side of the floor, though he’s more effective shooting on the left side of the court. He’s also a pretty strong scorer off the bounce, using an underrated first step and craft to get to the basket and finish with his dominant hand. His scoring outbursts versus Timpanogos and Palo Verde kept his team in the game.
