Continue ReadingBelieve it or not, we are officially one full month into the Indiana High School Basketball season. Having personally been in the gym for 19 games while catching several others via live stream online, I thought it would be a good time to hand out some early season superlatives. There are plenty of teams and players worthy of recognition, and in typical Prep Hoops Indiana fashion we will continue covering the state corner to corner as the season rolls on, but these are some of the programs and prospects that have stood out in a major way over the first month of basketball.
Best Team: Zionsville Eagles
It is hard to argue with what Zionsville has done so far this season. The #1 ranked team in our Prep Hoops Indiana Super poll, the Eagles started the season off in impressive fashion with an opening-night win over Carmel. They then rattled off four consecutive road victories over qualities opponents and have now built a 7-0 record. Junior point guard Logan Imes Logan Imes 6'4" | PG Zionsville | 2023 State #202 Nation IN has been outstanding averaging 20.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.
Best Player: Fletcher Loyer Fletcher Loyer 6'4" | SG Homestead | 2022 State #108 Nation IN
Expectations couldn’t have been set higher going into the future Purdue Boilermakers senior season. Fletcher Loyer Fletcher Loyer 6'4" | SG Homestead | 2022 State #108 Nation IN was expected to be a leading candidate for Mr. Basketball, one of the state’s leading scorers, and the best players on a state title contending team. He has backed all of that up by scoring 27.8 points per game for a 6-2 Homestead team that is ranked #7 in the Prep Hoops Indiana Class 4A polls. Loyer has remained a Mr. Basketball front-runner through the first month of the season.
Surprise Team: Blackhawk Christian
This isn’t so much of a surprise to us here at Prep Hoops Indiana as Blackhawk was a team we wrote about in our Class 2A preview that could still compete for a state championship. However, when you lose Mr. Basketball and a number of other contributors from a state championship team a step back would only be natural. The Braves rolled through a pair of 4A opponents to start the season in Fort Wayne North and New Haven and are now 5-0. Gage Sefton Gage Sefton 6'4" | SG Blackhawk Christian | 2023 State IN and Josh Furst Josh Furst 6'6" | C Blackhawk Christian | 2023 State IN have been outstanding stepping for what was lost to graduation. Blackhawk will not go away quietly come tournament time.
Surprise Player: Aidan Lambert Aidan Lambert 6'3" | SG Snider | 2022 State IN
Again, not so much of a surprise to us that saw him over the summer score 40+ points in the Charlie Hughes Showcase and play well on the AAU circuit. However, to the state at large, Lambert was a lesser known prospect coming into his senior high school season. He burst onto the scene with a 40-point performance in Snider’s opening night win over East Noble and then really turned heads by scoring 51 points at the Champions of Character Classic against Merrillville. Lambert is an incredibly explosive guard and one of the best available prospects in the state.
