Championship Game
Mustang 62 Putnam City North 55
Mustang junior Jacobe Johnson Jacobe Johnson 6'3" | SG Mustang | 2023 State OK is one of the top football recruits in the country. He’s a big, fast and makes plays on offense and defense for the Broncos on the Gridiron. He’s earned offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and more Power 5 programs . This winter for the Broncos, he’s also a game changer on the hardwood. In last night’s semifinal, he was held scoreless in the first half. In the next three halves of basketball, he scored 36 points in route to leading his team to the tournament title and picked up MVP honors for himself.
Many football players that trade their pads for shorts rely on their strength and athleticism to bully the opposition. The 6 foot 3 Johnson is a bully guard, but he’s also a bonafide true basketball player. Along with powerful drives to the rim, Johnson is a real three level scorer. He has great body control to stop and nail midrange jumpers. Then in the championship game against Putnam City North he made them pay for sagging off in the first half by going three of five from beyond the arc.
Joining Johnson in lighting up the scoreboard for Mustang was senior Ethan Scott Ethan Scott 5'10" | PG Mustang | 2022 State OK . When Mustang broke the halftime deadlock, it was a common sight for Oklahoma high school basketball fans. It came via a flurry of threes from Ethan Scott Ethan Scott 5'10" | PG Mustang | 2022 State OK . If the sharpshooter sees daylight and has his feet set, the shot is going up and odds are it’s going in. Scott connected on five triples on the night, with many of them coming at key moments in the second half.
In the semifinal, Scott was an uncharacteristic 3-9 from beyond the arc, and had some turnover issues. At times it looked like he was rushing his shot and trying to force the issue on Tuesday night. But against Putnam City North, Scott was back to his calm and automatic self. When the senior is locked in, there isn’t a better shooter in the state. There might be some on the same level but Scott’s pure shooting stroke is automatic. He recently picked up an offer from Eastern New Mexico, adding to his options for the next level.
Meanwhile for Johnson, football is very likely his future for the next level. But Johnson is also a Division One caliber basketball prospect as well and has received interested and offers from basketball programs. He’s walking in the footsteps of Steven Parker (Jenks 2014) and Josh Proctor (2018). They both went on to be starters in the secondary at blue blood football programs while also being elite basketball players.
On the Putnam City North side, junior guard Zander Baker Zander Baker 5'10" | PG Norman | 2023 State OK continued his wizardry with the ball. He did not have full court heroics in this one, but scored a game high 28 points. With quick hands on the defensive end, and the ability to get off his shot against bigger foes Baker leaves a big mark on the game. Joining the high energy Panthers in leaving his mark on the game was senior Jonathan Tonkumoh. The 6 foot 6 senior plays with outstanding energy and was a rebound short of a double double. He had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Tonkumoh is a raw player, but his activity level, size and athletic ability will make him a target for Oklahoma and regional junior colleges. Programs that are willing to develop an eager and high motor player, should be looking to Northwest Oklahoma City to take a look at the Panther forward.
3rd Place Game
Southmoore 54 Carl Albert 52
When playing Southmoore, looking for and stopping their cutters to the hoop is a key to stopping their offense. With the game tied and the clock running down, they once again got a cutter open at the rim. Junior Trenton Wetselline scored the go ahead bucket in the final 10 seconds to allow the Sabercats to finish their time in Mustang on a high note. One of the big reasons why Wetselline was open at the rim is because the Titans’ defense was focused on stopping senior guard Ethan Clark Ethan Clark 5'11" | SG Southmoore | 2022 State OK . Few teams were able to stop Clark on the weekend, as he added 18 points to his 55 point total for the three games. Joining Clark as a threat from beyond the arc for Southmoore, was junior Ryan Guerrero Ryan Guerrero 5'11" | PG Southmoore | 2023 State OK , who went 3-4 from three for 13 points.
Carl Albert was led by junior Jordan England Jordan England 6'2" | CG Carl Albert | 2023 State OK who scored 21 points. The lanky lead guard was able to get to the rack while also . Sophomore forward Jayden Mott was able in double figures with 11 points. A 6 foot 6 and big time athletic ability, it was good to see the high ceiling sophomore forward finish the tournament on a productive note for the Titans.
