George Rogers Clark ~ 10th Region
King of the Bluegrass Recap:
Win vs Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, FL) 76-60
Loss vs Dorman (Spartenburg, SC) 59-57
Win vs North Oldham 74-65
Win vs Ashland Blazer 89-53
This is the second event PH staff has been able to be in-person to watch the Cardinals. We had the pleasure of watching the preseason contest against Ballard in the Zip Zone Classic at Martin County. Coach Cook has a deep team that has already found good chemistry. They won the 5th place trophy in KOB and will look to take that momentum into the event at Lexington Catholic next week. The Cardinals are led by 2 combo guards, Tanner Walton Tanner Walton 6'3" | CG Lexington Christian | 2022 State KY (Sr.) and Jerone Morton Jerone Morton 6'3" | SG George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY (Jr.), and forward, Trent Edwards Trent Edwards 6'8" | PF George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY (Jr.)
Jerone Morton Jerone Morton 6'3" | SG George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY – Top 15 Player in c/o 2023
Morton is a big, southpaw guard that attacks relentlessly. He constantly had defenders off balance and had scoring success from all over the court. Morton had scoring outputs of 30, 22, 22 & 20. He is a skilled playmaker that has was a nightmare to guard throughout the tournament. His game is more evolved than what is put up on the scouting report. When he is matched up against taller players, he uses his quickness to create space for his shot or passing lanes to find open teammates. Teams had trouble figuring out ways to defend Morton and he routinely capitalized. His most complete game came against North Oldham, a team with size and length at every position. Morton scored 22 points (50+% shooting), snagged 8 total rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Morton was the sole representative on the All-Tournament Team.
Tanner Walton Tanner Walton 6'3" | CG Lexington Christian | 2022 State KY – Top 20 Player in c/o 2022
Walton is a strong combo guard that does everything on the court very well. Lower body injuries may have halted his athletic potential, but Walton plays with a strong core and low center of gravity that gives him a physical advantage over most guards in the state. Throughout the event, Walton made the extra pass, battled down low for a rebound, knocked down the contested shot, and jumped the passing lane for a transition basket. Walton is second on the team in scoring, but he does so much for the Cardinals team that will not show up in a box score. Walton received the Player of the Game award in the last game against Ashland Blazer.
Trent Edwards Trent Edwards 6'8" | PF George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY – Top 25 Player in c/o 2023
Edwards is a skilled forward that played outstanding in every game. In the game against Dorman, he battled against two Division 1 prospects, Jordyn Surratt and Noah Clowney. Edwards not only held his own but showcased why he is one of the best forwards in the state. He knocked down outside shots, connected on his free-throws, and worked the paint area nearly every possession. He followed up that game by putting up another productive game against North Oldham. This event was the perfect test for Edwards and surpassed our expectations.
