Twenty high school teams from all over Texas participated in this midseason tournament, and although I wasn’t able to see every team play, I was really impressed with every school I did have the opportunity to watch. With that in mind, here are seven guard prospects that caught my eye during the event:
Eric Brown Eric Brown 6'3" | SG Steele | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’1’’ Shooting Guard | Cibolo Steele HS – Brown showcased deep range from behind the three-point line, and also some clutch shot-making down the stretch of his afternoon matchup vs. Frisco Lone Star. He knocked down several NBA range threes in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, including one in the final 20 seconds of the contest to help get his team into overtime, where Brown once again hit a deep triple to lead his team to a 2-point victory. He can get it done off the dribble, from the catch, or with step-back and side-step moves. The Steele senior wanted to take the important shots and produced in the biggest moments of the game.
Kemauri Millender Kemauri Millender 6'0" | PG Clear Brook | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’1’’ Point Guard | Clear Brook HS – Millender looked dynamic in Clear Brook’s narrow victory over Little Elm, finishing the matchup with 27 points. He plays fast but always looks in control of the game, appearing to process information quickly. His speed with the ball certainly stood out, as well as his deep package of floaters and runners that he deployed on numerous occasions. The senior guard’s passing was excellent too. He was responsible for some brilliant assists in addition to his scoring output, showing that he is able to torch opposing defenses in a number of ways.
Isaiah Foster Isaiah Foster 6'0" | PG Frisco Memorial | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Frisco Memorial HS – Foster was a two-way contributor for Memorial on Monday. He is a tremendous decision maker as a lead guard, doing a nice job of quarterbacking the offense. The senior floor general had some nice finishes at the rim with bodies all over him, showing good speed with the ball when blowing by defenders. At the other end, Foster was noticeably productive, coming up with several steals as well as a well-timed block from behind. Moreover, he was great in transition when turning defense into offense.
Kaden Shelburne Kaden Shelburne 6'0" | PG Rockwall | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’0’’ Combo Guard | Rockwall HS – I don’t want to stick Shelburne with the “crafty scorer” label, because that doesn’t do his game justice. He is a creative scorer. The 2022 combo guard is a shifty prospect who can produce on or away from the ball. He found holes in the defense Monday night and buried some off-balanced shots from weird angles. He was excellent from mid-range, displaying that he is going to let it fly if given enough space, even if he is in an awkward spot.
Parker Whisenhunt | 2023 | 6’1’’ Shooting Guard | Sulphur Springs HS – Whisenhunt’s outstanding athleticism allows him to play bigger than his actual size. The 6-foot-1 two-guard exhibited that he only needs one step to elevate above the rim and flush dunks with some power. His burst was also noticeable. He possesses a deceptively quick first step that can make undisciplined defenders look silly. Whisenhunt is an efficient three-point shooter from the catch too, particularly thriving from the corners. Additionally, the Sulphur Springs junior was solid as a perimeter defender. This is a prospect with next-level ability.
Oryne Stewart | 2023 | Shooting Guard | Allen HS – Stewart came off the bench and was excellent in Allen’s evening matchup vs. Rockwall. He knocked down a pair of threes, showing off a pretty shooting stoke and deep range from the outside. The 2023 prospect was also effective as a slasher when weaving his way through traffic to either convert at the basket or earn a trip to the free throw line. He was always ready when his number was called and should be a steady contributor for the Eagles this season.
Drew Steffe Drew Steffe 6'6" | PG Frisco Memorial | 2023 State #122 Nation TX | 2023 | 6’5’’ Combo Guard | Frisco Memorial HS – There’s not much I can say about Steffe that hasn’t already been said. The No. 9 rated prospect in our 2023 rankings can produce on or away from the ball, is an outstanding shooter from the outside, a versatile finisher at the basket, and an accurate distributor. I was impressed with his isolation scoring on Monday, taking defenders off the dribble and scoring with ease. This is a high IQ player who should be ready to contribute day one at the next level.
