The varsity game did not get tipped off until 8:35 p.m., but it was worth the wait. There was plenty of talent on the floor for both teams between our Class 4A #3 Arsenal Tech Titans and Class 1A #2 Indianapolis Tindley Tigers. Let’s breakdown the game and evaluate some of the top prospects.
It was a slow and sloppy start for both teams with turnovers and missed shots dominating the early minutes. Outside of a Rasheed Jones Rasheed Jones 6'6" | SF Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN three and a big two-handed slam by Antonio Lisenbee, the Titans couldn’t get going in the first quarter. Reggie Bass Reggie Bass 6'4" | SG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State #175 Nation IN was 0/3 from deep as Tech would lead just 9-7 after the first quarter. For Tindley, it was all Jayden Pinkston Jayden Pinkston 6'6" | PF Southport | 2023 State IN early as the 6’5″ slasher scored six of his team’s seven points but also picked up his second foul late in the period.
In the second quarter, Arsenal Tech upped the tempo by increasing the pressure defensively and it worked to their advantage. Forcing some turnovers and playing in transition got their backcourt trio rolling. Dayveon Turner Dayveon Turner 5'11" | PG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN scored 8 points in the quarter while Jones and Bass each also entered the halftime break with 8 points. Tech led 30-22 heading into the second half.
A three and breakaway dunk by Jones, followed by a pair of threes from Bass, allowed the Titans to pull away in the third quarter. By the three-minute mark they were up 49-31 as they would go on to score 32 in the period to take a 62-43 advantage. The Indianapolis Tindley guards started to really struggle with the length and athleticism of the Tech backcourt which led to some turnovers and easy baskets.
The floodgates remained open for Arsenal Tech in the fourth as they continued to extend their lead. They would eventually finish of their second 50 point half in as many games to begin the season and cruise to a 80-64 victory. Rasheed Jones Rasheed Jones 6'6" | SF Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN led all scorers with 22 points on 5/11 shooting from beyond the arc and 5 rebounds. Dayveon Turner Dayveon Turner 5'11" | PG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN added 20 points while Reggie Bass Reggie Bass 6'4" | SG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State #175 Nation IN chipped in 19 points and 6 assists. Antonio Lisenbee was excellent as well with 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.
For Tindley, Jayden Pinkston Jayden Pinkston 6'6" | PF Southport | 2023 State IN led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Evaluations:
(More evaluations will be posted in our weekly evaluation recap on Sunday)
Rasheed Jones Rasheed Jones 6'6" | SF Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN (Arsenal Tech H.S. 2022): Long 6’6″ frame and can really shoot the basketball. 5/11 from deep in this one. One of the better pure catch-and-shoot guys in the state, and definitely one of the best still available. This was the best I’ve seen him play in awhile. Loved seeing him mix it up on the glass and contribute to the rebounding effort. Very good defensively using his length to guard multiple different positions throughout the game.
Dayveon Turner Dayveon Turner 5'11" | PG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN (Arsenal Tech H.S. 2022): Scoring lead guard that has some explosiveness off of the dribble getting to the basket. Broke down the defense multiple times and finished at the rim. Dangerous in transition with his quickness. Whatever college program ends up getting him will be getting a bucket-getter.
Antonio Lisenbee (Arsenal Tech H.S. 2022): Probably the player that stood out the most in terms of how impressive he was compared to my expectation. Lisenbee is a 6’7″ forward with vertical athleticism and solid present strength. He is an above-the-rim finisher offensively and a rim-protector defensively. Plays with a very high motor. College coaches still in need of a big man in 2022 need to be reaching out about this prospect.
Jayden Pinkston Jayden Pinkston 6'6" | PF Southport | 2023 State IN (Indianapolis Tindley 2023): The 6’5″ athletic wing was excellent Tuesday night slashing and driving to the basket. He plays incredibly hard on both ends and can really impact the game with his explosive athleticism. Attacks closeouts and gets to his right hand to score off of the dribble. Got up and finished above the rim a couple of times. Rebounded at a high level on both ends of the floor. When building a 2023 recruiting list you need to at least get eyes on Pinkston. Intriguing prospect.
