In this piece we will be discussing the West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs and how they looked in their twenty-three point win against the Mandan Braves.
It was certainly anything but a slow start for Coach Kirchoffner and the Mustangs, as they began the game strong from behind the arc with Kaleb Larson Kaleb Larson 6'3" | SG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND hitting three deep shots in just the first seven minutes of play. Overall Larson impressed me with his ability to calmly bring the ball up the court, shoot from beyond the three point line, and not force anything while playing offense. The Sheyenne guard also showed that he was bought in on the defensive end, getting down in a good stance the entire game and being a pest while on the ball. Kaleb finished the game as the second leading scorer for the Orange and Blue, ending with a very solid thirteen points.
Another player that had a solid start for Sheyenne was forward Dominic Dosmann Dominic Dosmann 6'8" | PF WF Sheyenne | 2022 State ND , who had a few nice scores down low in the paint, and hit a three later in the game. I believe that if Dosmann plays more aggressive and trusts himself on the outside, he could be a match-up problem for opposing teams.
Finishing up the big three of the Mustangs is Michael Nhial Michael Nhial 6'7" | SF West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND . This kid is an absolute stud and one of the best players in all of North Dakota. Against Mandan the guard/forward had twenty-five points with a good amount of those being strung together in the second half to secure the blowout. Some take ways I have from watching Michael play include him being aggressive while on the drive and getting to the rim whenever he pleased, finishing strong through contact, and playing tough in the paint on both the offensive and defensive end. I also cannot forget to mention the rim rattling poster that he gave the crowd in the first half, dunking all over a Mandan defender.
Moving on, we can’t forget about the abundance of other key players that Sheyenne has at their disposal this year. Naming a few we have James Hagen James Hagen 5'9" | SG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND , Trent Freih Trent Freih 6'2" | SG West Fago Sheyenne | 2022 State ND , Zander Newton Zander Newton 6'4" | SF West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND , and Kellen Entz. But what makes these guys so important for the Mustangs? Well, Hagen is a guy thats going to work his tail off every time he steps on the court, Freih is a fearless player who has the ability to get you a bucket at any moment, Newton is tall and long with great athletics that allow him to help out on both ends of the floor, and Entz is a tough kid who isn’t afraid to get physical.
With the mix and variety that Coach Kirchoffner has at his disposal, I really see the full potential thats just waiting to form. While the season progresses, and their chemistry and teamwork evolves, the Sheyenne Mustangs have a chance to be a dangerous group in the Eastern Dakota Conference. And I’m excited to see where they can go from here.
