LA VERNE, CA—Despite a surge of Covid over the Southland, the Classic at Damien persevered with some outstanding games and talent galore—especially the underclassmen. There were some senior standouts like Colorado State-bound Jack Payne Jack Payne 6'5" | SF Boise | 2022 State ID (Owyhee/ID) and Fresno State-bound Joseph Hunter Joseph Hunter 6'3" | PG San Joaquin Memorial | 2022 #80 Nation CA-S (Damien) as well as some scintillating underclassmen like 2024 Vyctorius Miller (Crean Lutheran) and 2025 Jovani Ruff (LB Poly).
Jack Payne Jack Payne 6'5" | SF Boise | 2022 State ID (Owyhee/ID)
2022, SG, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Payne, who is headed to Colorado State, is a well-rounded player. He runs Owyhee’s offense with aplomb. Potent ball skills, solid shooting touch, and he doesn’t need an elevator to get to the 2nd level.
Joseph Hunter Joseph Hunter 6'3" | PG San Joaquin Memorial | 2022 #80 Nation CA-S (San Joaquin Memorial)
2022, SG, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hunter, who is headed to Fresno State, is a jack-of-all-trades type of prospect. He is the primary ballhandler for his team and he generally makes good decisions. He can break down the defense, exhibits solid ball skills, and he can score from all three levels.
Payden White Payden White 6'5" | SF Riverside Poly | 2022 State CA-S (Riverside Poly)
2022, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: White is one of the better-unsigned seniors in Southern California. He possesses that willowy frame and his overall skill set is improving. The slashing wing-type can get to the rim and finish, has solid ball skills, and he has a nice feel for the game. With his length and overall athleticism, he could evolve into a multi-positional defender as well.
Koat Keat Koat Keat 6'9" | PF Crean Lutheran | 2022 State #100 Nation CA-S (Crean Lutheran)
2022, PF, 6-foot-10, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Keat is an intriguing talent for the next level. He has incredible length and his overall skill set is impressive. He is not a natural scorer, but he impacts the game with his savvy. He is an astute passer, protects the rim, and can face-up his defender and create plays. He needs to improve his shooting touch and scoring package to elevate his game.
Jarrett Brown (Eastvale Roosevelt)
2022, CG, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: The chiseled combo-guard is a definite sleeper in the senior class. He gets great lift on his shot, shows a tight release, and he can finish through contact. He moves well without the ball and has an overall good feel for the game.
