Here’s a look at some players from Class A schools who started the new season off with a bang in Thursday night’s opening slate of games.
Martel Evans Martel Evans 5'11" | PG Creighton Prep | 2022 State NE – Omaha Creighton Prep
If you followed along with some of my summer coverage of 2022 prospects here in Nebraska, I made note of Martel Evans Martel Evans 5'11" | PG Creighton Prep | 2022 State NE ’ play multiple times and expected him to have a breakout senior campaign for Creighton Prep. Evans and the Junior Jays made the trip out west to Grand Island to open the season, and it was Evans’ layup just before time expired that gave Prep the 62-60 road victory over the host Islanders. Evans tied the game with 30 seconds to play on his one and only three-point attempt of the game. Evans led Prep with 21 points for the game on 7-12 shooting, as well as 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Evens is one of the better slashing scorers in the state, and what is extra impressive about his game are his intangibles such as his athleticism and body control when finishing inside. Evans is a fierce rebounder as well. He remains one of the top uncommitted prospects in the Class of 2022 and a guard to watch throughout the season.
Carter Tempelmeyer Carter Tempelmeyer 6'0" | SG Lincoln East | 2023 State NE – Lincoln East
Here we have another case of a team that went on the road to open the season and escaped with a win in the final seconds. This time we’re talking about Lincoln East, and their late-game hero was junior guard Carter Tempelmeyer Carter Tempelmeyer 6'0" | SG Lincoln East | 2023 State NE . He led the Spartans with 17 points on the night, which included three makes from 3 point range, but no bucket was bigger than his layup as time expired to give the Spartans a big road win to open the year. Tempelmeyer was incredibly impressive every time I saw him play this summer with OSA Padilla, Carter will see consistent varsity minutes this year for the first time. His shooting ability from outside and slashing skill give him a very solid inside/out game offensively as a 6’2 combo guard.
Josiah Dotzler Josiah Dotzler 6'3" | CG Bellevue West | 2023 State #225 Nation NE – Bellevue West
I have been thoroughly impressed with Josiah Dotzler Josiah Dotzler 6'3" | CG Bellevue West | 2023 State #225 Nation NE ’s game since I first saw him play varsity minutes as a freshman a couple of years ago. Now the top 2023 prospect in the state, Dotzler began his junior season with a bang. He piled in 22 points in Bellevue West’s season-opening win over Norfolk. This included a solid. 4-7 shooting mark from 3-point range. Dotzler went on a one-man 12-0 run in the first half to get the host T-Birds settled in offensively after a somewhat sluggish start. I expect Dotzler’s interest from coaches at the next level to only increase as we go through the high school season.
Chandler Meeks Chandler Meeks 6'1" | CG Omaha Westside | 2022 State NE – Omaha Westside
Chandler Meeks Chandler Meeks 6'1" | CG Omaha Westside | 2022 State NE is one of, and quite possibly the top uncommitted 2022 guard in the state of Nebraska as we begin the high school season. He opened the season against Columbus with a stat sheet stuffing performance for the Warriors. He was not their leading scorer, that was senior forward and recent Concordia (NE) commit Logan Wilson Logan Wilson 6'5" | PF Omaha Westside | 2022 State NE , however, to go along with his 9 points, Meeks also had 9 assists and 5 rebounds. A very impressive stat line for a guard. Meeks continues to show improvement in his offensive skill as a combo guard option. Look for Meeks to keep stuffing stat sheets throughout his senior campaign at Omaha Westside.
