For me, I saw a battle of two Evansville powerhouses in Evansville North and Evansville Reitz and a top-level Sectional 8 showdown between Fishers and Carmel on Saturday night. Let’s take a look at some of the top guards from these games.
Player Evaluations
Matthew Bunnell (Evansville North) – 5’11″ 2022 PG: Bunnell is a smaller guard who has a ton of confidence shooting the ball from everywhere on the court. He showed off some very good range from the outside. Bunnell did show some very questionable shot selection at times, but he was knocking down shots at 5-15 in the game. I like him a lot more as a spot-up shooter than anything else, but I have yet to see much more that he can do in terms of creating. North needs him to step up if they’re going to be successful this season.
Ryan Caddell Ryan Caddell 6'2" | SG Evansville North | 2022 State IN (Evansville North) – 6’2″ 2022 PG: Caddell struggled mightily from the floor in this one, but the bigger guard did show some bright spots. He was able to get to his spot in the lane, and he knew what he wanted in terms of shot selection. Caddell was aggressive on the glass on both ends as he ended with 5 boards, but the entire Evansville North team just couldn’t seem to get shots to fall as they shot just 33% from the floor.
Jordan Jarvis (Evansville Reitz) – 5’10″ 2022 SG: Jarvis had a nice game off the bench in terms of just making things happen in all phases of the game. He only tallied 4 points, but he did have a smooth little stop-and-pop in the lane. The more impressive areas of his game were his 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to do the dirty work for Reitz. Jarvis showed off some nice vision with the ball in his hands, and on the defensive end, he seemed to always be reading passing lanes and getting steals and deflections. Jarvis is a fundamental player who is the type of guy that coaches love to have on their team.
Will Kirkland (Evansville Reitz) – 5’9″ 2023 PG: Kirkland is an undersized guard who showed a ton of energy for this Reitz squad. He has a nice shooting stroke from the outside, and he showcased very good touch around the rim in transition. Kirkland reads passing lanes well, and he has good hands on the defensive end of the floor which led to him being incredibly aggressive in transition. Kirkland is going to be a key for the success of Reitz this season.
Peter Suder Peter Suder 6'5" | SG Carmel | 2022 State #227 Nation IN (Carmel) – 6’4″ 2022 SG: Suder came up absolutely clutch for Carmel in this one. He scored the first 7 for Carmel, and then, he scored or assisted on 15 points in a row during the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter. Suder was hitting shots from the outside and being aggressive to the hole. He gets so low on his drives that it makes him so tough to stop. He also threw down a monster fastbreak dunk over Fishers’ Haralson to ignite the Carmel crowd. There is no doubt in my mind that he is a high Division 1 player after that game, and if he can join a team in which his primary role is to play off the ball and come off screens, he has the potential to be great in the future.
Josh Whack (Carmel) – 6’1″ 2022 PG: Whack had another nice game leading the Carmel offense. His on-ball defense is no doubt the best part of his game as he was able to shut down the Fishers’ guards. Whack still struggles with his shot, but his defense and ability to run the point make him an interesting D3 prospect.
Bryce Williams Bryce Williams 6'1" | PG Fishers | 2022 State IN (Fishers) – 6’0″ 2022 PG: Williams is a smaller point guard who uses his court vision to see the floor well and make the right passes. He is smooth with the ball, and he uses his quickness and athleticism to get into the lane. He likes to get into the lane, and he can finish with touch around the rim. He also showed off a nice floater at the buzzer over the Carmel bigs. Williams did make some poor decisions with the ball which led to turnovers and fastbreak buckets for Carmel, but he showed some bright spots that could make him a Division 3 guard.
