I was able to stop by the tournament this week and there was a lot of strong teams and good talent. Here’s a quick look at some of the top 2023 standouts I saw.
1. Louis Thomas – Leuzinger
Thomas stood out as a good point guard. He is a good ball-handler and he can dribble well under defensive pressure. He’s a pass first player but he can score if he needs to. He’s a solid shooter with consistent range out to the three-point line. He can handle the ball and he’s comfortable facing up and shooting over the defense. He can move without the ball too and is a solid catch and shoot player.
2. Nils Cooper Nils Cooper 6'5" | SF Crossroads | 2023 State CA – Crossroads
The tournament MVP, Cooper is an athletic finisher at the rim. He can extend and finish over the defense. He goes up strong under the basket. He keeps the ball high and out of reach of the defense. He’s a little bit slight, but he fights on the glass and grabs rebounds. He has the tools to be a very effective defensive player. He uses his length and timing to get deflections and force turnovers.
3. Kory Blunt Kory Blunt 6'3" | CG Birmingham | 2023 State CA-S – Birmingham
Blunt is a solid scoring wing. He is comfortable with the ball in his hands and initiating offense whether it’s on the break or in halfcourt sets. He has a good slashing game and he does a good job drawing contact and getting himself to the free-throw line. He can also pull-up off the dribble and shoot the midrange jumper. Good shooter off DHOs. He’s a good rebounder for a wing too.
4. Jaqari Miles – West Ranch
Miles is a player I’ve seen play a couple of times now and he always stands out as a solid scoring point guard. He has a knack for putting the ball in the basket and does a good job balancing scoring and playmaking. He’s a strong guard who finishes well in the paint. He pushes the pace well in transition. Off ball, he’s a good catch and shoot player with a consistent jumper at the three-point line. Knows how to make entry passes into the post.
