The human highlight reel was on full display in Arizona this past week, showcasing his 43″ vertical all over the floor. Harris is especially potent during fast-break situations, proving to have improved his creative finishing around the rim. Thanks to his exceptional verticality, Harris is up to 9.7 rebounds per game while doubling down as a weakside rim protector, boasting 3 blocks per contest. Arguably the most powerful above the rim athlete Colorado has seen in the past twenty years, Harris’s future is as bright as anyone, along with his recent All-American selection as a wide receiver.
Mostapha Elmoutaouakkil Mostapha Elmoutaouakkil 6'4" | SF Eaglecrest | 2022 State CO – Eaglecrest
Elmoutaouakkil has made yet another leap on the offensive end, increasing his scoring output to 19.6 points along with highs in free throw percentage at 76%. At 6’5, Elmoutaouakkil is a sneaky athlete with long strides, excelling as a driver and free throw creator. As of today, he is ranks ninth in the state (5A) for free throw attempts. While he is a dependable driver, another benefit is his shooting off the catch, currently shooting 44% from beyond on 32 attempts. The next step will be improving his assist to turnover numbers (2.1 : 2.8), however Elmoutaouakkil has one of the highest potentials in the class.
Aguirr Dwam – East
The 6’6 forward has been essential to the strong 9-1 start for East, proving to be a high energy interior presence. Rebounding is an effort based skill, it can be taught to an extent, but you need to want the possession more than the opponent. Simply put, if you do not box out Dwam you are actively surrendering the possession because he will get the board. While he is a plus athlete, he is aided by his wingspan that has to be at least +4″. He is a capable mid range shooter at a stand-still, hopefully he continues to work on expanding his range throughout the season. One nitpick with Dwam is his defensive awareness, as he tends to ball-watch a bit more than you would like considering how crucial his role on defense has been.
Jayden Washington Jayden Washington 6'5" | PF Eaglecrest | 2022 State CO – Eaglecrest
Another Eaglecrest wing, Washington has been drawing attention as a 6’5 complementary scorer with the athleticism to finish above the rim. Washington excels as a scorer around the rim, benefitting most from attacking closeouts and taking advantage in broken plays. Washington is currently shooting 33% from three, but I expect that number to continually rise, due to his refined form. He has always been a consistent free throw shooter on moderate volume, at 86% last season and 73% so far this year. Division 2 teams have been keeping tabs on Washington for the past few months, as he can immediately serve as a versatile defender with the budding jumper.
Alex Tongren – Ponderosa
Tongren has been a pleasant surprise during Ponderosa’s dominant 7-2 start to the season. Standing at roughly 6’5 and 210 pounds, he has the size to back down defenses while dramatically improving his rebounding numbers from 3.4 (JR) to 8.1 (SR). Tongren has a compact shot, where he is deadly from the mid-range and has shown a willingness to keep taking threes. Last season he shot 47% from distance (30 att.) and is off to a slow start at 27% (15 att.), however I am sure he will return to mean soon enough.
