We stopped by St. Monica high school last Friday to check out the Westside Tip-Off Classic hosted by Mariners’ new coach Roy Walker. Below we take a closer look at some of the senior standouts from the event.
Joey Chammaa, Crossroads – Chammaa can be listed under the “basket getter” category as the 5-foot-11 combo guard finished with a game-high 22 points in the Roadrunners’ win over St. Anthony. Chamma hit the Saints defense with a couple of triples, but did most of his damage off the bounce where he was able to get into the paint to finish with a crafty layup or draw a foul and get to the free throw line. Chammaa wasn’t the biggest or most athletic guy on the court but his basketball IQ and ability to create space allowed him to get to his spots and score.
Landon Lewis Landon Lewis 6'6" | PF Harvard-Westlake | 2022 State CA-S , Harvard-Westlake – The Brown University-signee didn’t have much resistance in as the Wolverines dispatched and overmatched L.A. University team, 73-23. We used this game to look at Lewis and Harvard-Westlake in different lenses. For Lewis, it was about development of his overall game and he has shown strides as a rim protector, rebounder and interior finisher both in the half-court and transition settings. Lewis has an intriguing frame and skill-set that, if developed properly, could lead to him being a major piece to Brown basketball’s future.
Myles Che, Fairmont Prep – Che continued to impress with his command for the point guard position. The 6-foot-1 senior has the ability to control the pace and tempo of a game while identifying good transition scoring opportunities and when to pull the ball back and run half-court offense. Che had 19 points, including three 3-pointers, in Fairmont Prep’s loss to St. Bernard and led a big second half comeback which had the Huskies within a couple possessions of a victory.
Rayniel Wright, St. Bernard – Wright came off the bench for the Vikings and provided much-needed scoring punch and defensive energy to help them pull out a win against a tough Fairmont Prep team. Wright is a bouncy wing athlete with some ball skills to initiate offense and break a defender down to get to the rim in transition and half-court scenarios. Wright’s ability to get into the paint and draw fouls paid off as he knocked down all eight of his free throw attempts en route to 14 points.
