The St Monica High School tournament has always been a marker of the beginning of the season and under new head coach Roy Walker Jr., that tradition continued.
I was able to attend the event on Nov. 16, the second day of the tournament. The second featured the following matchups: Compton/Cleveland, St Anthony/St Monica, and St Bernard/Venice. Here’s a look at additional standouts that I saw.
1. Elijah Price Elijah Price 6'8" | PF St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S – St Anthony 2022
I’ve seen Price play a couple of times now and he is very good scorer in the paint. He’s active and mobile and he can finish strong. He’s versatile, he has good size and he can handle he ball at times. He’s quicker than big men and he’s got a size advantage over smaller forwards. He’s a strong rebounder getting up in traffic and getting put-backs. He’s a solid interior defender. He challenges shots and does a good job staying vertical.
2. Aaron Petch – Cleveland 2022
Petch was a solid point guard who did his job running the offense. He’s a very good playmaker in the halfcourt. He has good vision and he looks for his open teammates. Does a good job finding cutters along the baseline and he kicks out to shooters when driving into the lane. He’s a good facilitator but he can score as well. He’s very quick off the dribble and a good ball-handler under duress. He can finish through traffic at the rim.
3. Placido Silva – Compton 2022
Silva is a perfect glue guy. He fits in well alongside Compton’s key guys Malachi Scott Malachi Scott 6'6" | SF Long Beach Jordan | 2022 CA-S and Brandon Releford. He sets screens well. He’s an active rebounder who keeps possessions alive. He moves well without the ball and floats out to the perimeter. His shooting mechanics are a little bit different, but he can knock down the open three. When he puts the ball on the floor, he has a nice little runner once he gets into the lane.
4. Kendyl Sanders – St Bernard 2024
Sanders stood out for his defensive ability. He’s a great interior defender who contests shots well and stays down on fakes. He can also slide out to the perimeter and stay in front of wings and guards. He slides his feet well and he cuts off the passing lanes and the ball-handler’s driving lanes. He’s a very good offensive rebounder too. A lot of his points come from cleaning up misses. He has good size and length and is a good compliment to the Vikings perimeter attack.
