While there’s plenty of players we haven’t seen or are ready to have breakout years, we will take a look at some of the best players we know of that we think will have big seasons.
We take a look at five players we think will be in the conversation for VHSL Class 1 Player of the Year.
Spencer Hamilton Spencer Hamilton 6'9" | C Parry McCleur | 2022 State VA | 6’10” C | Parry McCluer 2022
Hamilton was last year’s Class 1 POY after leading Parry McLeur to a state championship, and he returns as the favorite with his size and skill set that makes him very tough to guard at that level. The 6’10” center mans the middle defensively and is a good shot blocker, he can score it in the paint with either hand and he has perimeter skills as far as being able to handle the ball and shoot it from deep too.
Ethan Millirons Ethan Millirons 6'0" | PG Auburn | 2022 State VA | 6’0” PG | Auburn 2022
While Hamilton was POY last year, Millirons was as a sophomore when he led Auburn to the state championship game before it was canceled due to Covid. The St. Thomas Aquinas commit is one of the top floor generals in the state as he’s highly skilled and smart off the bounce, he can score the ball from all three levels and shoots it very well and he can make players on his team better as well.
Cade McCulloch | 6’7” F | West Point 2022
McCulloch finished as a first team All State selection last year leading West Point deep into the playoffs before coming up short, and despite a toe injury during the fall he looks like he’s ready for a big senior season. He’s a mismatch at this level with his ability to put it on the deck and create and make shots from multiple levels, he can rebound and finish in the paint as well and he’s a solid playmaker who can see over the defense and deliver good passes.
Connor Lane Connor Lane 6'3" | CG Twin Springs | 2023 State VA | 6’3” CG | Twin Springs 2023
Lane was a breakout player in SWVA last year, and he was named an All State selection as a sophomore and could be one of the top scorers in the area this year. The 6’3” combo guard is crafty off the bounce and able to get in the lane and finish in the paint, he can make shots from deep consistently and when he gets it going he can takeover games.
Stuart Hunt | 6’0” PG | Altavista 2023
Hunt is a big reason that an Altavista program that won multiple state championships last decade is back on the rise, and the Second Team All State selection last year will be a guy to watch for this year. He’s a dynamic yet fundamental guard who can handle and get in the lane at will, he has the ability to score it from anywhere on the court and he plays the game the right way.
