Continue ReadingThe Virginia Beach Sports Center put on their second annual “Feast Jam” jamboree at their beautiful facility at the oceanfront, and they had some of the top teams across the east coast competing in a multi-game jamboree style.
Here’s a look at some of the top standouts from the high school division.
Kam Craft Kam Craft 6'5" | SF TSF | 2022 State #54 Nation GA | 6’7” WF | The Skills Factory 2022
A Xavier commit who is considered a top 75 player in the nation in most national rankings, Craft is one of the best shooters in the country and has all of the prototypical size and tools for a shooter at the next level. He’s excellent at moving off the ball and coming off of screens and hitting shots on the move, he has the same form on every shot and has deep range and he’s very capable of attacking closeouts and finding shots in the midrange and at the rim where he’s no slouch either.
Donald Hand Jr. | 6’5” CG | Landstown 2022
Hand Jr. showed why he has a chance to be the top scorer in the VHSL this year as he can just flat out fill it up every time he’s on the floor and against whoever is put in front of him. The 6’5” combo guard is a true three level scorer that can fill it up off the bounce or off the catch, he’s a good athlete who can finish at the rim and he’s very crafty as he knows how to get to spots or find contact and get to the free throw line often.
Cam’Ron Kearney | 6’5” WF | Salem 2022
Kearney is back at Salem after a short stint in North Carolina at Moravian Prep and he showed why there should be more division one on him moving forward. At 6’5” he has great size and is an explosive athlete, he can play on or off the basketball and has a versatile skill set and he showed improvement in his consistency from deep and showed takeover ability when his team needs it.
Greg Melvin Greg Melvin 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2022 State VA | 6’7” PF | Cape Henry 2022
Melvin continues his big fall heading into his senior season as he looks like one of the best players in the 757 and leads a very talented Cape Henry team that won the state championship last year. He’s a big, strong athletic forward that can play inside-out, he’s a very good finisher at the rim and a big time rebounder on both ends and he looks more aggressive and consistent on the perimeter as well.
Leroy Hamilton | 6’2” CG | Oscar Smith 2022
Hamilton is a player to keep an eye on for a Smith team that could surprise some people despite losing their top player who moved to Vegas, and that’s because Hamilton is ready to step in and take that role. The 6’2” combo guard is a dog on both ends of the floor, he is shifty and strong off the bounce and he can score it in bunches from a number of different spots on the floor.
Tristan Whitfield | 6’7” PF | Cape Henry 2023
Whitfield is a big time volleyball player who holds high major offers in that realm and it’s easy to see why with his mix of size and athleticism, but he showed he can get down with the best on the basketball court as well. The 6’7” power forward is a mobile big-bodied forward who runs the floor hard and plays with a good motor, he can play above the rim easily and has soft touch around the rim and he is relentless on the glass on both ends of the floor.
Barry “Toa” Hollenbeck | 6’2” CG | Grassfield 2023
Hollenbeck is a new name to me at Grassfield and he’s the type of player that basketball heads like myself will love to watch with his skillset and IQ for the game. He has decent size on the perimeter and is an excellent shooter from deep, he can score it in bunches and play on or off the basketball and he has great instincts on both ends of the floor.
Steven Solano | 6’10” C | Catholic 2024
Solano has come into VA and early in the fall shown that he’s one of the top prospects in the class, if not in the entire state, as you won’t find many 6’10” players with his athletic tools at such a young age. He’s very mobile both running the floor and laterally, he’s quick off his feet both as a finisher and a shot blocker where he has very good timing and he shows the ability to catch at the elbows where he has good touch and is able to face up and survey the floor as well.
Josiah Rickards Josiah Rickards 6'3" | CG Catholic | 2024 State VA | 6’4” WG | Catholic 2024
Rickards is another very talented young piece for Coach Steinberg to build around as the 6’4” guard is very versatile and has a mix of athleticism and skillset is very tough to match up with. He’s a gifted player who can play on or off the basketball, he’s improved in his ability to create for himself and others off the bounce and he is a good shot maker on the move and off the catch as well.
