Playing against top-level competition isn’t new for the lanky 6-foot-6, 170-pound guard as he’s done it for years at the AAU level. So when things opened up for him to transfer up to Canby from North Marion, he decided to make the leap.
“I had a better opportunity and a chance to come here, so I decided what was best for me,” Meyers said. “I love it here. I fit in with the guys well and we have a great time already. I’m having fun.”
Meyers described the step up in competition he’s seen at Canby this fall, just in open gym. “I’m definitely getting pushed more here,” Meyers said. “When you’re at a small school you’re the best player there. Here you’ve definitely got to push yourself.”
Meyers is no stranger to getting pushed. Last off-season he played AAU basketball with Elite 24 and this past summer he joined a brand new team based out of The PAC in Salem. He was able to travel to Las Vegas and California for some tournaments. “We got in a lot of games this summer so it was fun,” Meyers said. “I really practiced on extending my range and finishing at the hoop and my mid-range game and ball-handling – pretty much all around.”
A versatile guard who has some hop in his step – Meyers easily dunks with two hands – another hope out of his transfer is an increase in his college recruitment. He remains completely open at this time. “I think coming (to Canby) will definitely open up a lot more schools looking at me,” Meyers said. “I just want to play in college, at the next level for sure.”
If Meyers’ goals for himself and the Cougars come to fruition, he believes it will certainly help the cause. “I just want to get as far as I can here,” Meyers said. “I think we’re capable of going all the way. We have a great group of guys and I think we can really push ourselves and get to the Elite Eight, get to the Final Four, and get that state championship.”
Meyers currently ranks as the #60 player in the recently updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
