If you have never been there then you should get to Newman for a game this winter! There were players from all across North Dakota at the Tryouts today. In the 17U division, there was one player from northwest Minnesota as well. The players went through skill work, mini-games, and they ended with a scrimmage. In this article, we are going to look at impressive players from the tryouts.
IMPRESSIVE PLAYERS Class of 2023
(alphabetically ordered)
Erik Foster Erik Foster 6'5" | PF Rugby | 2023 State ND |6-5 F| Rugby
He looked good during the skills portion. I liked the way Foster finished with both hands around the basket. He can make all the moves a guard can. Erik really impressed me with his 15-foot jump shot. His shooting form and balance are textbook. Foster elevates well and he has a high release point. It was easy to see that Foster has a nose for the ball. He should be a double-double guy this season. He is also a good passer. Expect Foster to be an All-Region 6 Player in his junior season.
Gannyn Monette Gannyn Monette 6'2" | SG Turtle Mountain | 2023 State ND |6-2 G| Turtle Mountain
This kid is a shooter all the way. Monette has really nice form. His mechanics are exemplary. When attacking the basket, I liked how Gannyn absorbed the contact and finished. Monette moves well without the ball. He also looked good in the pick-and-roll game. The kid from Turtle Mountain is an intriguing player.
Ian Johnson Ian Johnson 6'5" | SF Minot Ryan | 2023 State ND |6-4 G/F| Bishop Ryan
He showed off his athleticism in warm-ups with athletic dunks. I really like this kid’s game. He can play inside and out on both ends of the court. Ian is long and stretchy. His ball-handling skills are advanced and his jumper is soft. Johnson stood out in the pick-and-roll game. He looked good setting the screen and rolling. Ian also stood out coming off a screen with the ball in his hands. Johnson is a versatile as they come. He was great on the O-boards and he stayed with his shot which resulted in a put-back tip. His post moves and the way he sealed his man impressed me. Ian’s passing out of the post also stood out to me. Lastly, his communication with teammates was top-notch.
Josh Moser Josh Moser 6'1" | SG Medina-Pingree-Buchanan | 2023 State ND |5-11 G| Medina-Pingree/Buchanan
He excelled in the ball-handling portion. In the scrimmages, I liked how Josh ripped and drove baseline for buckets. He also had an impressive O-board put-back tip-in. Even though he is 5’11, Moser still posted up. He showed off a slick Mikan move into a step-back jumper. I like his creativeness and footwork.
Luke Lunday |6-7 PF| St. John
The first thing you notice with Lunday is his length and long arms. He grew on me as the afternoon went on. In the scrimmage, I liked the way Luke contested shots without fouling. Lukes jumper from mid-range is soft and he has a high release. Lunday certainly has potential and it looks like he could keep growing.
Matthew Selensky Matthew Selensky 6'3" | SG Bismarck St. Mary's | 2023 ND |6-3 G| St. Mary’s
This Saint has good feet and silky smooth handles. I liked the looks of Matthew’s finger-roll finishes in traffic. When he had a hand in his face or his body got bumped, it didn’t matter. Matthew still finished the bucket. He stood out to me as a slasher. Selensky attacked from all angles on the perimeter.
Riley Thorpe Riley Thorpe 6'1" | SG Ellendale | 2023 State ND |6-0 G| Ellendale
He showcased a good-looking hesitation move. It looks like Riley is a 3-point shooter, he knocked down multiple. His one dribble baseline pull-up also looked good. Thorpe should have plenty of chances to knock down 3-balls this winter. The Cardinals big man Wanger will draw a ton of attention. Riley will be ready to nail triples this winter.
Tate Grossman Tate Grossman 6'4" | SG Harvey/Wells County | 2023 State ND |6-4 G| Harvey/Wells County
Before I watched him play, I could tell he was long and strong. Tate showed off his athleticism in warm-ups with a few powerful dunks. His footwork looked good in the skills portion. He is also a creative finisher. During the ballhandling drills, I noticed how Tate snapped his crossover, it was low and quick. I liked his pull-up J. He was really impressive in the scrimmage when he would pull up over everyone and get his shot off. I liked how he finished with both hands. His step-back move was one of the best I saw all day. He had one really great move. Grossman was posting up, he leaned towards the lane, and spun back towards the baseline. From there he faded slightly and knocked down a sot fall-away jumper. His hang time was also noteworthy. Did I mention that Grossman is athletic?
Tyson Mortimer |6-3 G/F| Warren/Alvarado/Oslo (MN)
He is a long-player who can get it done on the wing or in the paint. Tyson is a gifted athlete. His mid-range jumper looked spot on all afternoon.
