Today, we roll on with introducing the top Mr. Basketball candidates in the Class of 2022. In total, we will outline who we believe to be the five primary candidates to win the coveted award. There is no rhyme or reason to the order in which the candidates are released, so don’t read too much into that. We began this series by looking at Mr. Basketball candidate Braden Smith Braden Smith 6'0" | PG Westfield | 2022 State IN from Westfield High School and then announced Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN of Cathedral High School as our second candidate. The next candidate in our ongoing series was Wisconsin commit Connor Essegian Connor Essegian 6'4" | SG Central Noble | 2022 State #170 Nation IN of Central Noble High School, followed by Lawrence North’s Chris Gunn Chris Gunn 6'5" | SG Lawrence North | 2022 State #114 Nation IN . Our final candidate is Fletcher Loyer Fletcher Loyer 6'4" | SG Homestead | 2022 State #108 Nation IN from Homestead High School.
Loyer, a Purdue signee, is ranked as the #4 prospect in the Prep Hoops Indiana Class of 2022 rankings. After moving in to the Fort Wayne area from Michigan after his sophomore season he immediately became one of the best players in the state. He may not have the “career achievement” of some four year IHSAA players, but he is more than deserving of being a candidate for Indiana’s top individual award.
Leading Homestead to a 25-1 record before ultimately falling to Carmel in the Regional Championship game, the 6’4″ guard was one of the state’s leading scorers at 24.4 points per game. Loyer also chipped in 4.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.1 steals a game. He is a do-it-all guard could legitimately average around 30 points per game this season.
If we are all being honest, Fletcher Loyer Fletcher Loyer 6'4" | SG Homestead | 2022 State #108 Nation IN probably deserves to be the favorite heading into this season for Mr. Basketball. He had an outstanding junior season, experienced great team success, and should only improve this season. Assuming that Homestead is a top five team in the state, faces off with Carmel in the regional once again, and Loyer averages around 25 points per game, it will be really hard to deny him the award.
