Today, we roll on with introducing the top Mr. Basketball candidates in the Class of 2022. In total, we will outline who we believe to be the five primary candidates to win the coveted award. There is no rhyme or reason to the order in which the candidates are released, so don’t read too much into that. Last week we began this series by looking at Mr. Basketball candidate Braden Smith Braden Smith 6'2" | PG Woodlan | 2024 State IN from Westfield High School. Our next candidate to highlight is Cathedral High School point guard Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN .
It might be hard for a Cathedral player to win Mr. Basketball simply because there is SO much talent on the court. Jaxon Edwards Jaxon Edwards 6'6" | SF Cathedral | 2022 State IN is an Indiana All-Star candidate committed to Murray State, Xavier Booker Xavier Booker 6'11" | PF Cathedral | 2023 State #4 Nation IN is a 4-star national prospect ranked #1 in the Class of 2023 by Prep Hoops Indiana, and Jake Davis Jake Davis 6'6" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN is a Junior All-Star candidate as well. However, anyone who watches the Irish play knows that Comer is what makes the team go. The senior point guard should absolutely be considered for the states most prestigious award.
Comer, ranked as the #12 prospect in the Class of 2022 by Prep Hoops Indiana, has shown steady improvement every season under head coach Jason Delaney at Cathedral. As a freshman he often times looked like just that, a freshman. At the time he was a bad shooter (4/30 from three-point range) and averaged 3.5 assists to 2.5 turnovers. Since then, he has developed into an efficient scorer, a good outside shooter, and has improved his assist to turnover ratio to nearly 2:1.
As a junior, Comer averaged 15 points per game on impressive 50/41/82 shooting splits. He has really improved his efficiency over the years and has become an excellent decision maker with the ball in his hands. Last year he averaged a career-best 6 assists per game and is now in striking distance of reaching the 500 career assist milestone this season. Comer is the engine that runs the show for the Irish on both ends of the floor. His candidacy will be a “best player on the best team” argument.
If Cathedral can survive the gauntlet of Sectional 10 and make a run at Gainbridge Fieldhouse you can rest assured that Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN will have a lot to do with it. At that point, voters will have to have him on their ballots. Comer has the career achievements with a 54-15 record, will score well over 1000 points, and dish out 450+ assists. He was named a Junior All-Star a year ago. Now, he will serve as the floor general for the likely preseason #1 team in the state. The Cathedral point guard is undoubtedly a deserving Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate.
