It was a unique event and the first of it’s kind, having the event work in conjunction with a college basketball program. At the open run, there were some impressive 2 way players. Here’s a look at some of those athletes:
Jayden Brock Jayden Brock 6'5" | SF Byron Center | 2024 State MI (2024, Byron Center)
It was really impressive seeing an underclassman, in a high pressure event, talking and communicating the way Brock did on defense. Offensively, he maticulously attacked the D showing a high basketball IQ.
Damaryon Fishburn Damaryon Fishburn 6'4" | CG Trillium Academy | 2023 State MI (2023, Trillium)
Fishburn was a force on both ends. He’s a taller guard with nice length, giving him the ability to eat up his man on defense. Offensively, he’s a diverse scorer that can do it in a ton of different ways.
Gryphon Mayes Gryphon Mayes 6'6" | PF Pinckney | 2022 State MI (2022, Pinckney)
Mayes made a statement at the Flight Hankamp Open Run. His mid range game has become a bona fide weapon on the offensive end. I also liked his defensive versatility and ability to cover offensive players with a variety of strengths.
Brennan McKenzie Brennan McKenzie 6'0" | PG Adrian | 2023 FL (2023, Adrian)
McKenzie is calm, cool, and collected on offense. He makes high percentage passes, including hitting cutters and post entry passes, and reads the defense well. McKenzie is continuing to develop as a defensive stopper on the perimeter as well.
Javion Otten Javion Otten 6'4" | SG Kenowa Hills | 2023 State MI (2023, Kenowa Hills)
Otten was a playmaker on both ends at the open run. He attacked the rim, fending off defenders with his offhand, and had electrifying finishes above the rim. Otten made big plays on defense by challenging shots with his verticality.
Ryan Young (2022, Buchanan)
Two words can probably sum up Young at the Flight Hankamp Open Run: Tough and Strong. On defense, he used these traits to maneuver his man and establish good defensive position. Offensively, he used his strength to power up through defenders to get a bucket.
