One of those players is Michael Nhial Michael Nhial 6'7" | SF West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND , a six foot six inch senior guard out of West Fargo Sheyenne High. Along with covering Michael’s past success with the Mustang team, I also asked him some questions regarding his last high school off-season and the expectations for this coming year.

This past year during the 2020-2021 season Nhial became a spark off the bench for the Sheyenne Mustangs. Whether it was posterizing a defender with his off hand, having a nose for the ball in the paint, or hitting one of his 28 three pointer’s, Michael cemented himself as a player that shouldn’t be taken lightly. After having a solid junior year for Coach Kirchoffner and the Mustangs, where we saw Nhial average 6.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, I was intrigued to see how the off-season has been going and where his mindset is for the final run.
What are some of the things you have been doing this past off-season to improve and return as a better player for your senior year? “I played AAU this summer for Team Sizzle and got to go against great competition from all over the country. Being able to measure myself up against other kids, learn what works and what doesn’t work all the time, and be exposed to different kinds of players has taught me how to compete with anyone. Along with AAU, I’ve also been lifting weights to strengthen my body for the upcoming season.”
After coming off the bench as a junior while playing behind two All-state players, what are you looking forward to most about having a bigger role this season? “I’m excited to step into a bigger role on the team as one of the leaders. None of our starters from last year are returning, so it’s going to be really fun getting to play with guys that haven’t been in the spotlight as much and show everyone what we can do. I know I speak for the rest of the seniors by saying that it’s going to be an interesting year, because the season is going to be what we make it.”
Do you have any specific goals for your senior campaign? What do you have in mind for the team and yourself right now? “My number one goal along with the teams’ is to win a state championship. We’ve been chasing it for a while now getting close time and time again, but hopefully this is the year, and we’ll do whatever it takes to get there.”
Have you had any interest from college coaches? How has that process been going? Any idea on when you might like to commit? “I recently received an offer from Dakota State and Concordia. Some of the other schools that have shown interest include the University of Minnesota Crookston, University of Mary, Youngstown State, University of Dallas, and Bismarck State College. My family and I are trying to take it one step at a time right now with the recruiting process, but it’s been a lot of fun traveling and getting to see different schools. At the moment, a commitment is most likely to come out around the mid to late season.”
