After struggles with transfers and youth, we finally saw some of the potential within the league and the players of tomorrow. Going into 2022, there are 5 guys that really stand above the rest in terms of the best players in the league.
Antaune Allen Antaune Allen 6'2" | CG Dunbar | 2023 State OH (2023) Dunbar 6-foot-2 SG
Allen had a great Summer and really showed what he is capable of doing going into his junior year. Allen played more of SG with his AAU team Team Flyght while runs the point with Dunbar in the HS season. His athleticism is hard to matchup against and defending him on the perimeter proves to be tough to do. Allen is explosive off the bounce and can beat guys with the dribble drive or a solid midrange shot. He could be one of the best scorers this upcoming season in the Dayton City League.
Lee Benson Lee Benson 6'5" | PF Meadowdale | 2023 State OH (2023) Meadowdale 6-foot-6 PF
In a league dominated by guards and slashers, Benson attracts your eye right away with his size and presence on the block. Initially a defensive guy, Benson has added to his bag on the offensive end and become a much more collected post player than his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Great vertical leap and long arms. Benson can collect rebounds with ease and will be able to defend opposing bigs when the Lions face a team that has some size. With the Dayton City League being more guard focused it will be interesting to see how Benson does when he is forced to defend more on the perimeter. His athleticism should allow him to compete regardless.
DayJuan Anderson (2023) Ponitz 6-foot-2 SG
Anderson has been one of Dayton’s best 2023s since he stepped foot at Ponitz his freshman year. Now going into Year 3, he looks even better than before and poised for a potential breakout year. Known in the past for being more of a shoot-first guard, Anderson has added confidence to put the ball on the floor and added the extra quickness to get by those athletic guards on the EYBL and in Dayton City League. Not only a gifted scorer, Anderson can sit down and defend either guard positions with his slightly bigger frame and quickness.
Brendan Crump (2022) Stivers 6-foot-3 SG
Crump brings a different style of play than what we see in the Dayton City League. The majority of the teams focus more on the high volume scoring and not as much on defensive basketball. Crump takes pride on the defensive end of the floor and arguably is the best perimeter defender in the league. Quick hands and good footwork. Crump is continuing to work on his offensive game and should see his role increase on the offensive end going into this year.
Ronald Smith IV Ronald Smith IV 6'3" | CG Thurgood Marshall (OH) | 2022 State OH (2022) Thurgood Marshall 6-foot-2 CG
Smith broke out last year for the Cougars after the mass exodus of transfers out after coach Shawn McCullough left for Springfield. His scoring capabilities came to the forefront as he became one of the their best scoring options. Now 2022 could be even better as the Cougars graduate their key role guys and now have even more need for Smith’s scoring touch. He can handle the ball and make the right decisions with it. Of all players in the DCL, he’s got the best chance to be POY in my opinion as the top senior.
