The bouncy slashing guard has made waves this offseason with his powerful finishes around the rim and improving jump-shot. Finishing around the rim is Coleman’s bread and butter, as he confidently uses either hand when going for double clutch and reverse layups. His exceptional verticality as a 6’1 guard allows him to hover in the air longer and create easy looks. Another area to track will be his shooting consistency off the catch or off handoffs, this ability to stretch the floor will quickly create wider driving lanes. Coleman is not just a slasher, he proved to find his teammates in the low post and dunker spots created by his scoring gravity around the rim.
Terrell Moorer Jr Terrell Moorer Jr 6'2" Mesa Ridge | 2023 CO . – Mesa Ridge
The shifty guard has a knack for driving into the lane, often created by a variety of quick moves. Moorer Jr. is a better passer than the statistics would imply, while only posting a assist to turnover ratio of 2.1 : 2.4, he could easily be averaging 5 assists based on the looks he creates. This past season at Mesa Ridge he had averages of 10 points, 2.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. His rebounding numbers stand out due to his position, seeing how often he grabs a defensive rebound and pushes the pace will be a key to development.
Joseph Garcia Joseph Garcia 5'9" | PG Denver South | 2023 CO – Denver South
The scoring guard has been an electric shooter off the catch, while also growing as a pull-up shooter when getting downhill. This past season at Denver South, Garcia averaged 13 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game while posting encouraging shooting splits of 50 FG/47 3P/82 FT. There is no doubt Garcia will be a prolific shooter next season, but the next step for him as a creator will be maximizing his attempts around the rim. Last season he only put up 17 free throw attempts, if he can leverage his shooting gravity to create driving lanes, then Garcia’s future will be even brighter.
Gavin Hershberger Gavin Hershberger 5'10" Rock Canyon | 2023 CO – Rock Canyon
Playing the guard for one of Colorado’s top schools, Hershberger looks to solidify himself as one of the premier playmakers in the class. The high IQ guard has been playing varsity since his freshman season, proving to be especially composed and not forcing anything on offense. Last season he put up 8.6 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game on shooting splits of 36 FG/31 3P/88 FT. During the fall league at Belleview Christian, we got a quality look at Hershberger against future division 1 and 2 athletes. During that stretch he was consistently one of the six most potent athletes, as he proved his shooting improvement off the dribble.
Christian Drummond Christian Drummond 6'2" | CG Doherty | 2023 State CO – Doherty (title image)
Playing with the Doherty varsity squad since his freshman year, Drummond looks to solidify his defensive abilities as one of the more versatile perimeter defenders in the state. Last season, Drummond averaged 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game on shooting splits of 44 FG/34 3P/68 FT. Drummond prides himself on high efficiency shots created from off-ball cuts and pushing the break on the wings. As is so important for perimeter athletes, working on the jump-shot efficiency off the catch will be essential to maximizing his potential as a slashing guard.
