The players went through fundamentals, skill drills, live shooting, and a scrimmage. It was good hoops and it was great to see some new players. I was impressed with the dedication of these players to travel across a snowy North Dakota for basketball tryouts on a Sunday in November. Talk about a love for the game! Now let’s look at the impressive players.
IMPRESSIVE PLAYERS Class of 2025
(alphabetically ordered)
Ben Gudajtes Ben Gudajtes 6'1" | SG Midway/Minto | 2025 State ND |5-11 G| Midway/Minto
He is a lefty with a nice stroke. Ben looked good at shooting the ball during the drills. He looked to be at his best from midrange. Ben showed great hustle, which every coach loves to see. Gudajtes was also impressive scoring in transition.
Carter Amsler |5-8 G| Dawson County (MT)
The kid from Montana looks like he can really shoot it from deep. Carter can hit shots off the dribble or spotting up. He really impressed me with his shot fakes once he got into the lane. He was not shy and Carter was aggressive on both O and D.
Drew Passa Drew Passa 5'7" | SG Drayton/Valley/Edinburg | 2025 State ND |5-2 G| Drayton-Valley-Edinburg
He had one of the quickest crossovers in this group. Drew is a smooth shooting lefty with a quick and easy release. His follow-through looks like Don Meyer taught him a few things. Passa has good balance and he moves well without the ball. Look for Drew to do damage this winter in catch-and-shoot situations from beyond the arc.
Isaac Schulte Isaac Schulte 6'3" | SF Dickinson | 2025 State ND |6-0 F| Dickinson
He is a long-armed player. Isaac is a nice athlete that covers a ton of ground. He stood out because of his hustle and his offensive rebound put-backs.
Kaden Pierce |6-2 F| Warren-Alvarado-Oslo (MN)
He is a nice athlete with extra hang time. Kaden looked good with a crafty up-and-under move from the block. Pierce showed a soft fade-away jump shot from the block. Pierce has nice footwork on the block. He went coast to coast multiple times in the scrimmage. Kaden grabbed the board, dribbled up the court, and finished with a layup. I liked the way Kaden passed the ball ahead in transition. Lastly, I was impressed with his offensive rebounding and his second-chance points.
Karter Peterson Karter Peterson 6'6" | PF Thompson | 2025 State ND |6-4 PF| Thompson
He is long, strong, and Peterson has a wide frame. Karter was unstoppable when he wanted to score. I love his footwork. Peterson can finish with both hands at the rim. He is a great rebounder that high-points the ball. This big man dunks with ease. In the shooting drills, Karter showed a very nice mid-range jumper. When finishing, Karter does a great job of keeping his shoulders square with the basket. Even though he is a big dominant player he still shared the ball out of the post. In the scrimmage, Peterson scored with a hand in his face and he beat the double team multiple times.
Lucas Mcnichols Lucas Mcnichols 6'2" | SG Bismarck | 2025 State ND |5-11 G| Bismarck
He was one of the best ballhandlers during the skills portion. Lucas is a shifty and athletic guard. I loved how he flew down the court in transition. Mcnichols has a great hesitation move, he used it many times to get by a defender. Lucas uses his body well when finishing. He was great at shielding the defender when going up for a shot. I like his finishing ability. Lucas is skilled at finger rolls and reverse layups from every angle. Mcnichols also has a nice pull-up game and a great floater. He did not only look good on O, Lucas was aggressive on the defensive end. He may have been the best perimeter defender that I watched in the 15U division.
Nolan Weidner Nolan Weidner 6'2" | SG Dickinson | 2025 State ND |5-9 G| Dickinson
He stood out during the ball-handling drills. Nolan has crisp handles. He has quick feet on defense, which makes him a good on-ball defender. Nolan has long arms. In the scrimmages, Nolan stood out with his transition baskets when he got to the rim. He also hit a smooth pull-up 3-pointer in transition.
Porter Granger Porter Granger 6'2" | SF New Rockford/Sheyenne | 2025 State ND |6-1 G/F| New Rockford/Sheyenne
This lefty had a nice-looking pull-up jumper from 3-point land. Porter finished well against contact. I liked how he read his defender. When his man went to help, Granger would float to the open spot and he often scored after his teammate found him. You have to like when a young player is already reading and reacting to his defender. Porter also finished well in traffic, he showed good concentration. The Rockets have a nice young player coming up.
