As we move closer to tipoff week, Prep Hoops will continue to preview programs, coaches, and players from around the state. After an unprecedented 2020-2021 season, programs look to get back into their routine for the launch of the 2021-2022 campaign.
Bourbon County Colonels
2020-2021 Record
4-15 Regular Season
0-1 Postseason (Loss to Montgomery County in the opening round of 40th District Tournament)
Coach Lamont Campbell gave Prep Hoops a detailed overview of his team. Let’s take a quick rewind to the 2019-2020 campaign. The Colonels were arguably one of the top three teams in the 10th region. They had wins over Scott County, Clark County, Madison Central, Lexington Catholic, and Mason County. They entered the 40th District Tournament with aspirations to cut down the nets but lost to Montgomery County; whom they had defeated twice previously in the regular season. That team won 24 games and was led by ten seniors. Entering the 2020-2021 season, the Colonels were a batch of brand new players that did not have much varsity experience under their belt. Staying true to their identity, Coach Campbell maintained an uptempo and frantic playing style. Unfortunately, the scoreboard was not in their favor most nights. The team ended the season with only four victories. However, we are entering a new season with new goals, expectations, and lots to prove!
Top Scorer: DeJohn Blunt DeJohn Blunt 6'4" | CG Great Crossing | 2023 MD , is a top 70 player in the class of 2023. Check out any highlight or box score from Blunt’s spring and summer seasons with Cave Gym Elite and you will see monster scoring performances. Blunt has the potential to lead the region in scoring and be on the leaderboard for the state. Coach Campbell and his coaching staff have been working with Blunt to develop him into a complete basketball player. Expect to see an all-around player that will begin to attract more college interest.
Top Transfer: Kentarrion Downey, is a rangy athlete that will be a force in the paint. Downey transferred from cross-town rival, Paris, where he led the team in rebounds despite only playing half of the games. Downey brings athleticism, length, speed, defensive force to a Colonels team that expects to compete against GRC, Robertson County, Montgomery County, and other 10th Region foes.
Top Playmaker: Todd Dumphord Todd Dumphord 5'9" | PG Bourbon County | 2023 State KY , is the returning point guard for Coach Campbell. Dumphord is truly the “quarterback” of the team. He is tasked with facilitating the ball on offense and pressuring the ball on defense. When the Colonels are at their best, Dumphord is leading the charge. Expect to find Dumphord’s name reflected in several categories on the stat sheet on a nightly basis.
Coach Campbell has depth, shooters, playmakers, and chemistry that should give them a chance to win every night in every gym across the state. Ultimately it will come down to playing with confidence within the team unit, executing the scouting report, and elevating their individual skills to be a region contender in March.
