The Eagles are competing for national recognition and their journey shines a positive light on South Florida basketball. For what it’s worth, I think its a good thing.
Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson leaving Pine Crest for Overtime Elite opens up this list a bit.
Let’s look at my picks…
Taylor Hendricks Taylor Hendricks 6'9" | PF Calvary Christian (FL) | 2022 State #124 Nation FL – Calvary Christian Academy
2022 Taylor Hendricks Taylor Hendricks 6'9" | PF Calvary Christian (FL) | 2022 State #124 Nation FL is a prospect I’ve always liked because of his two-way ability. The 6-foot-9 power forward runs the floor like a guard while playing above the rim in transition. Any sort of fast break opportunity with Hendricks out in front will likely lead to a slam dunk. He can also hit mid-range shots and 3-pointers. On defense, Hendricks’ length and athleticism lead to rejections and buckets of rebounds. He’s a mismatch stretch four at this level. Hendricks is committed to UCF.
Jaylen Carey Jaylen Carey 6'8" | PF Westminster Academy | 2023 State #129 Nation FL – Westminster Academy
2023 Jaylen Carey Jaylen Carey 6'8" | PF Westminster Academy | 2023 State #129 Nation FL had a great summer with NightRydas Elite. With every passing day and workout, he’s simply getting better. Carey is around 6-foot-10 with a mature body (235 pounds) at the power forward position. His footwork and athleticism is vastly improved from his days with University School. I just don’t see many players matching up with his frame and movement. He’ll be a double-double candidate every time he steps onto the floor. Carey can also pop out and knock down perimeter shots. He could be the best player in South Florida and he still has another year left. Carey holds offers from Ole Miss and Stetson.
Marvel Allen Marvel Allen 6'4" | SG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #46 Nation FL – Calvary Christian Academy
2023 Marvel Allen Marvel Allen 6'4" | SG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #46 Nation FL has quickly become one of the best guards in the nation. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound prospect plays aggressive while using a fluid handle to dictate tempo. Allen has a compact frame and can beat his opponent off the dribble. He’s an improved shooter from all areas, which only enhances his resume. Most recruiting systems list him as a four-star or five-star prospect. Allen holds offers from Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Boise State, Georgia, Illinois, LSU, Memphis, Miami, Ohio State, Memphis, Ole Miss, Penn State, Stanford, USF and Virginia Tech.
Carl Cherenfant Carl Cherenfant 6'4" | CG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #68 Nation FL – Calvary Christian Academy
2023 Carl Cherenfant Carl Cherenfant 6'4" | CG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #68 Nation FL joins Allen to form the the best backcourt in South Florida. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard has played well ever since helping Calvary to a 3A state title last spring. Cherenfant has length and athleticism to cause problems for defenders. Moreover, he put’s a lot of pressure on his opponent playing downhill. Cherenfant’s long-range jumper continues improve. He holds offers from FAU, App St, USF, Iona, Memphis, LSU and Western Kentucky.
Justin Abson Justin Abson 6'9" | PF North Broward Prep | 2022 State #230 Nation FL – North Broward Prep
I’m going with 2022 Justin Abson Justin Abson 6'9" | PF North Broward Prep | 2022 State #230 Nation FL because of his responsibility to North Broward Prep and its frontline. The 6-foot-9 forward needs to perform like he did as a junior for the Eagles to be successful. Although, I think Abson is even better than he was last season. He’s improved as a defender and became more athletic with Nightrydas Elite. Specifically, I love his instincts as a rim protector. Abson will collect every rebound and block a high volume of shots.Just a reminder, he averaged 16.8 points, 13 rebounds and 3.2 blocks a season ago. Abson’s leadership cannot go unnoticed as well. He is set to announce his college commitment on October 31st. 2022 Gregg Glenn Gregg Glenn 6'7" | PF Calvary Christian (FL) | 2022 State #161 Nation FL was my other pick here
