“We lost five starters,” said Coach Massey mid-October via phone interview. “We had three that transferred and left. We have kids, the guys that we have, are fairly experienced. They are a solid group.”
The senior class is thin with two players: Sam Bailey, Kenton Major.
“Our junior class is who we will have to lean on,” shared Coach Massey. “I coached a lot of those kids in the fifth or sixth grade. My son is in that group, so I have been around those kids a long time. As a group they are very solid.”
The Bison are loaded with players capable of playing either guard or forward, kind of that positionless basketball wing. Expect to see Matthew Massey, Sam Corey, Ben Ogan, and Grady Parsons all operating at any of the old-style 2-3-4 positions.
Frustratingly, the size that Station Camp does have (Sam Bailey, Kenton Major) will be vital and possibly somewhat rusty.
“Sam Bailey is coming off shoulder surgery,” said Coach Massey. “Kenton Major has had some injuries as well. [Nate] Meadows is tough, savvy kid. Plays pretty good around the basket. Really good rebounder and works hard.”
Station Camp
#2 Ben Ogan (2023)
#3 Matthew Massey (2023)
#5 Sam Corey (2023)
#10 Anthony Eidson* (2023)
#22 Blake Lancaster (2023)
#34 Nate Meadows* (2023)
#23 Grady Parsons* (2023)
#30 Kenton Major (2022)
#34 Sam Bailey (2022)
It is difficult to pick the guy for Station Camp. Grady Parson will be key though. He can score from multiple points on the floor, run with the bigs, and mix it up on defense. The team will certainly need rebounding from the wing spots and Grady will be able to supply some post defense also.
“Grady is just a really good all-around player, can play anything point guard to center,” said Coach Massey. “Very fundamental and sound player…one of the guys that create his own shot.”
Guard is an interesting position in 2021-2022. So many minutes are up for grabs. Who will start? Who will finish? Who will ascend to take on the responsibilities?
“Anthony [Eidson] will be our starting point guard,” said Coach Massey. “He really makes us go. He plays hard, gets the ball where it needs to go. Very, very good defender.”
Additional scoring will be found in the person of Blake Lancaster. “He will see playing time. Very good shooter.”
The underclassmen are just not ready to have varsity impact. If any, Maddox Schlagenhaft might dress some, perhaps Braxton Bess. Maddox will be able to give some depth in the frontcourt, but again this team is almost entirely juniors.
