Last year was a strange year to say the least, and while games were limited, the bright side, is that it provides an opportunity to highlight more players this year. After strong grassroots performances, several players are prepared to put their names on the map. In this article, we take a look at players ready for breakout seasons.
Jakwon Hill Jakwon Hill 6'1" | CG Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM 6’0 CG Volcano Vista 2022 (#3PHNM 2022) – Hill looks to piggyback off a strong summer. The Combo guard showed that he can score the ball at a high level. He’s got good shiftiness, and speed, which allows him to seperate from defenders. I expect him to be one of the main options for VV this season.
Jose Murillo Jose Murillo 6'8" | C Highland | 2022 State NM 6’9 C ABC Prep 2022 (#5PHNM 2022) (featured image) – Murrillo checks the breakout category as well as the stockriser category. Coaches are always looking for size and the 6’9 5 man has that, along with good R and J athletic ability. Murrillo is a high-level shot blocker, on the defensive end, and offensively dunks everything around the basket.
Chris Parra Jr. 6’0 PG Atrisco Heritage 2023 (#6PHNM 2023) – I’m high on Parra. I like high IQ PGs with skill and believe that that’s the best description of the AH PG. Parra plays with good pace and is one of the top shooters in the state. His offensive versatility is one of his main strengths, as he can be used off the ball to space the floor, or on the ball to run the offense.
Tainui Taiaroa Tainui Taiaroa 6'6" | SF ABC Prep | 2023 State NM 6’6 SG ABC Prep 2022 (#6PHNM 2022) – Got to see Taiaroa a few weeks ago in Utah and was impressed. The wing is a good at every type player. Taiaroa can shoot the ball from the 3, defend multiple positions, and help his team on both backboards. With ABC playing on the grind session, Taiaroa has a chance to open a ton of eyes.
Kenyon Aguino Kenyon Aguino 6'7" | PF Volcano Vista | 2025 State #257 Nation NM 6’5 PG Volcano Vista 2025 (#2PHNM 2025) – I was really impressed with Aguino when I saw him a couple months ago. At this point, he’s the best pure post player I’ve watched anywhere in the class of 2025. Aguino has good footwork and a soft touch around the rim. I expect him to be a household name, by the end of the season.
Caleb Carr Caleb Carr 6'10" | C Las Cruces | 2023 State NM 6’7 PF Las Cruces 2023 (#36PHNM 2023) – Carr has a good frame and plays with a solid motor. Playing alongside his brother, who is the overall number 1 player in the state, should provide Carr with the opportunity to shine. He’s a banger, that has shown the ability to score the ball around the basket. Las Cruces will be one of the best teams in the state, providing Carr with even more opportunities to shine.
