The strong 5-foot-7, 150-pound point guard spent the last three years at 1A Life Christian but after a coaching change, a switch was needed. Reyes decided to come back close to home for his senior year of high school and will be suiting up this year as a Clackamas Cav.
“When I was thinking about what high school I can go to and show off my talents, I knew that there was a bigger stage at 6A,” Reyes said. “I actually live out here and I grew up with these guys. So Clackamas is what I was thinking and I made the change. I’m honestly really happy about being here and playing in the Mt. Hood Conference against good players and point guards like Esyah (Pippa-White), Connor (Hills). I’m excited about the new challenges.”
A physically strong point guard, Reyes can really push the ball in transition, be a pest defensively, and knock down open threes. While the jump up to 6A is big, it shouldn’t be too much of an adjustment for Reyes. He’s played high-level AAU basketball the past few years with OBC and while he was set back a little this summer due to an ankle injury, he worked hard on getting back on the court.
Part of his regimen was working out with former Clackamas standout Elijah Gonzales and picking up areas outside just the physical aspects of basketball. “I worked on being a leader and also the mental part of the game,” Reyes said. “I’m short, obviously, so if I can get a mental edge and be smarter than the opponent, then I have the advantage. And I also worked on my mid-range game.”
Reyes is hopeful the move to Clackamas will also increase his recruitment. He’s been talking with Multnomah and has a visit to campus coming up with an offer possibly on the way. Some other schools have touched base such as Ave Maria in Florida. The level of play is something right up his alley as he’s keeping all his options open.
“NAIA is where I want to be, so hopefully I keep getting more looks,” Reyes said. “I’m just looking for an opportunity to play. I really want someone who wants me and fits my skills and my play style.”
As Reyes has settled in with his new teammates at open gym workouts, one thing remains clear – what they want to accomplish this season.
“We want to go to the Chiles Center – that’s our goal,” Reyes said. “People are doubting us – we didn’t get invited to the Les Schwab (Invitational). There’s a lot of pride here at Clackamas – it’s everyone’s dream to grow up and play here and Coach (Mitchell) really believes in us – he’s here at 6AM six days a week. We want to go far and make it to state.”
