The shifty 6-foot, 160-pound point guard was an all-state guard in Alaska the previous few years but moved down to Beaverton for the shortened 2021 season – and you could say he’s known now. A Second Team All-Metro League selection, Westlake is now looking forward to a big senior season and capturing the attention of college coaches – starting with the PrepHoops Oregon Top 250 Expo this Sunday.
Westlake described the adjustment to Metro League basketball after making the move to Oregon from Barlett HS in Anchorage. “I’ve been talking to Coach Hewitt about coming down here for a couple of years,” Westlake said. “So when I got the call that I was eligible to play, I came down in April and started working out. I feel like I fit in pretty good and I like the system – we rely on attacking the hoop and kicking it out for three and that’s a good system for me.”
With Mountainside, Westlake was able to utilize his athleticism to get to the basket and finish as well as create for open teammates. While he wasn’t able to play AAU basketball over the past few months, he continued to work on improving his game.
“I really didn’t get to play any games but over the summer I really focused on my shooting,” Westlake said. “I know teams are really three-point reliant and that’s an area I need to work on. So over the summer I tried to get up as many shots as I could.”
From a recruiting perspective, Westlake notes that he’s heard from some of the local four-year programs such as Pacific and Multnomah. Starting with the PrepHoops Top 250 Expo, he’s hoping to capture the attention of more college coaches.
“I’m trying to pick up some offers as the season goes along,” Westlake said. “I’m open to anything, just looking to play ball somewhere.”
Mountainside is primed to have a big year in 2021-22 and some may even consider the Mavericks the Metro League favorite. Westlake is definitely looking forward to big things. “It’s going to be really exciting,” Westlake said. “We’ve got a good roster and I think it’s our year.”
Westlake currently ranks as the #46 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
