Continue ReadingThe first Annual NorCal Frosh/Soph Camp was held at Foothill High School in Sacramento CA. It was a good turnout with approximately 80 players competing in the two day weekend event. Considering the bad weather and a power outage that stopped play for a few minutes, it was a great day to be in a NorCal Gym watching quality players, and competitive games. Here’s a run down of some of the top players on Saturday.
Since we’re in NorCal we have to start with Ben Roseborough Ben Roseborough 6'3" | SG Bella Vista Prep | 2024 #158 Nation AZ of Sacramento HS. The highest ranking player in the PH NorCal rankings at #3 was at the camp on Saturday. This was his first competitive event in some time, he’s been out with a finger injury that shut him down for a while. He dropped at least 30 in his one game appearance just to remind us he can still bring it at a high level. He looked good dropping 3-pointers,(7) some from deep range, and then showing his all around ability to generate buckets.
8th grader Tyran Stokes 6’5 of Rancho Medanos Middle School in Pittsburgh CA. He would be in the conversation for MVP if awards were given. He put on an display of basketball you normally see in good high school players. He has the tools to be a big time player if he continues to display what we saw this weekend. The 6’5 Stokes led his team to the championship game, losing 77-74. We haven’t seen the best of the 8th graders in California, this NorCal 2026 has to be in the conversation.
Mikey Lewis 6’3 of Denver Prep. Oakland Soldiers EYBL. He’s our pick for camp MVP if awards were given. Before he left for Denver Prep he was in the top 5 PH Rankings in this 2024 Class. He didn’t disappoint. The high energy combo guard showed off his skill set throughout this event. He has plenty of individual moves that frees him up to do guard things. Most notably his mid-range jumper off the dribble went down consistently. Superb handles up top, good decision making, in half court and transition He hits 3’s from the corner and wings. He brought his defense along for the ride.
Tyler Thompson Tyler Thompson 6'5" | SG Vanden | 2024 State #261 Nation CA-N 6’5 of Vanden HS.
Thompsons versatility was on display early in Sac Town on Saturday. He showed his lead guard skills early on in the first contest. At 6’5 his ball handling, and passing skills stood out as he looked to involve other players. He was good at taking his man off the dribble, backing defenders down and shooting over the top for buckets. He’s becoming a more efficient shooter when it comes to knocking down 3-point shots. He was good in transition and nailed a few on the catch and shoot from the corner. He went 5/6 for 3’s in one game.
Zion Wilburn Zion Wilburn 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2024 State AZ 6’6 of Pinole Valley HS
It was like a coming out party for Wilburn at this event. We got a good look at the long wiry transfer from Salesian Prep. He had all his inside/out tools working for him. After a sluggish start. He got it going using his length to score in and around the basket, his handles to force his way inside off the dribble for buckets inside. He really became more consistent with each game he played after that, shooting the 3-ball. He and Stokes lead their team to the finals only to lose 77-74 to a team led by Mikey Lewis.
PH got it’s first look at 2025 Alec Blair of De La Salle HS. A 6’7 versatile player who you might put in the position-less category. Blair didn’t wait long to showcase his skill set on Saturday. The 6’7 lefty has the handles to operate from any area on the court, his passing and vision in the open court was good when he led the transition break after grabbing one of his many rebounds. He had a nice set of moves working in, and around the post and off the dribble drive from the corners and wings. To top it all off he’s a good shooter from the 3-point line.
Quentin Bundage 5’9 of Archbishop Riordan HS.
Bundage was in command on the court. The strong physical guard showcased his playmaking ability on Saturday that ultimately led to winning the championship on Sunday. Bundage along with Lewis were the top back court duo at the event. He was just as effective attacking, from end to end, and picking his spots for his dribble drive pull-up jumper that went in often. Bundage would have gotten the top defender award at this event. He’s a lock down defender when he’s locked in.
Elijah Holmes 5’9 of Lincoln HS
Holmes was as calm and steady as can be on Saturday. He’s an superb ball handler, plays under control and can play fast or slow. He kept defenders off balance. When he wasn’t pushing in transition, he was making excellent long up court passes. He too has a consistent mid-range jumper that goes in off the dribble.
Ryan Pettis 6’2 of Serra HS. San Mateo CA.
It was our first look at Pettis. He’s fast with or without the ball, athletic and has a quality skill set to do a lot of things on the court. His ability to play as fast as he does with good balance was impressive. He’s the player you want to get the ball to in transition, he has good vision and will make snap passes or he’ll just blow by you on his way to the basket. He’s the same way on defense he’s makes ball handlers uncomfortable.
Darnel Hunter 6’0 of Grant HS.
Hunter was consistent with his play on Saturday. He’s a slick handling guard who’s relentless attacking defenders from different areas on the court. He can go left or right on the dribble and finish with the off hand. He’s fast in transition. Hunter plays with a chip on his shoulder.
