The gym at Amistad High School was absolutely full of talent at the New Haven Senior Showcase put on by New Haven Heat Fam, so you know we have a second batch of standouts who made their mark on the afternoon. You can catch the first group of hoopers I talked about here!
Andre Nugent, Notre Dame, 5-11
Nugent was one of the best floor generals on the day and led his team to some serious success in the scrimmage portion of the workout. A bigger bodied guard, Nugent was able to take bumps from the defense when going downhill and finish around the rim. But he really excelled from the perimeter, where it felt like he didn’t miss a shot all afternoon. He was unafraid to dial up from 3 and was punishing any defender that gave him even an inch of space. There’s ground to cover on his physical aspects of the game, but with a high IQ and a pure jumper, Nugent is sure to be a contributor to a great Notre Dame squad.
Seny Toure, Hillhouse, 5-10
Toure was all energy from the first jump ball. He’s a traditional on-ball pest who is an absolute menace on the defensive end. Toure is a relentless defender with a knack for finding where to be on the floor and making going any direction absolute hell for the guards he’s facing. Toure also has some of the soft skills of the game to back up his intensity. He’s a competent ball handler and an offensive threat when going downhill. He even dialed up a couple of jumpers when his defender gave him space. He’ll be a fun guard to watch as he complicates things for the state’s best guards all season long.
DeAndre Coardes, Hamden, 6-0
Coardes is a tried and true point guard who is as shifty as they come. He felt like the most mature prospect on the floor at any given moment and would kill defenders with his intelligent handle and well-developed IQ. His perimeter game was also on full display, as he was splashing threes from just about anywhere in the first half of the 5s. He slowed down a bit but still showed why he was worthy of a showcase invite and that he can add intelligent scoring to a team that will be highly competitive this season.
Javaun Calhoun, West Haven, 6-6
Calhoun may have been the most intriguing prospect of the day, especially considering he may the only player on this list that isn’t a guard. Calhoun is incredibly long and uses his length to stop shots around the rim and can guard on ball. He’s athletic and can yam the ball when the time is right. That being said, Calhoun is as raw as sushi and sometimes struggles with positioning defensively and offensively, leaving him out of the rotation a bit as an effective scorer. However, his pure physical skills and the fact that he can run the floor with ease is enough to make him a prospect to watch. With a post-grad year or some prep school work, Calhoun could potentially be a late season steal for a school that is willing to accept a high academic project.
