This time of year serves as warm-ups for teams and the ability to get live reps against other high school competition. I was able to attend the league this past Saturday, 10/16 and here’s a look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1. Isaiah Sherrard – Oak Park 2023
Sherrard is a solid wing player who is active in the paint. He has good footwork and he scores efficiently at the rim. He makes strong moves in the post and has good passing ability; he makes the right reads out of the post when the defense loads up on him. He can make plays with the ball in his hands off the dribble and he moves well without the ball too. Overall, he’s a forward with some guard skills.
2. Brandon Releford – Compton 2022
This was my third time seeing Releford play in the past month or so and he’s a solid point guard. The last time I saw him play, he was looking to pass more on his dribble drives and this weekend he was looking to score a little more. He shields his body well at the rim and can finish strong through the defense. He can rise up and shoot over the defense and he’s a pretty solid shooter from three-point range.
3. Nick Hanna – Brentwood 2022
This was my first time seeing Hanna play and he was a solid point guard. He controls the pace well in halfcourt sets and can attack the rim. He’s a great passer off dribble penetration; good dump-off passes to teammates around the rim. He can shoot the ball well off the dribble, or he can get himself open off ball and shoot off catch and shoot plays. He’s a solid defender on ball.
4. Deuce Walker – Washington Prep 2022
This was my second time seeing Walker play and he continued to stand out as another good point guard. He’s a very good ball-handler who can break the defense down off the dribble. He’s quick, especially in transition and he accelerates in a hurry. He can shoot it well from three-point range. His on ball defense is solid; he presses up on the ball-handler and he moves his feet well.
