The event featured some of Southern California’s top high school programs including: Santa Ana Mater Dei, Damien, Rancho Christian, Colony, St. Anthony, Fountain Valley, Eastvale Roosevelt, Gardena Serra, and more. In this piece we take a look at some of the top performers of the event.
Ariik Mawien, Capistrano Valley Christian – Mawien is an intriguing lefty prospect whose combination of speed, smooth ball handling and explosive athleticism around the basket make him a guy who Pepperdine wanted to commit early. Mawien has natural playmaking ability with the ball in his hands, whether it’s a blow-by of his defender and finish at the rim or a smart pass to an open teammate. The 6-foot-3 junior is a high level on-ball defender who pressures ball handlers and creates turnovers.
Nathan Medina, Valley Christian – Medina was probably the biggest revelation of this event. Medina is a lethal scorer both on and off the ball. His consistent three-point shot is his most effective way to put the ball in the basket, but, if a defender tries to over-play and run him off the line, the 6-foot-2 senior can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim for a high percentage basket or find an open teammate for a shot.
Vyctorious Miller, Crean Lutheran – This was our first long look at Miller in the high school setting and the talent is undeniable. The 6-foot-4 guard moves effortlessly on the court and his ability to change speeds and direction on a dime keeps his defender guessing as to what he’s going to do next. Miller can play out of ball-screen action and make good reads out of it, but can also break a defender down in isolation and create a scoring opportunity for a teammate.
Jimmy Oladokun, Damien – Oladokun continues to show why he’s one of the fastest rising prospects in the state. The 6-foot-8 forward is young for his grade, has a high academic resume and is as skilled as they come at the four or five spot. Oladokun, a junior, has a true inside-out scoring arsenal: He can step out to 15-17 feet and knock down a face-up jumper or take a slower defender off the dribble to the rim and his hands, footwork and dexterity around the rim make him a high percentage finisher in the paint.
