The event featured some of Southern California’s top high school programs including: Santa Ana Mater Dei, Damien, Rancho Christian, Colony, St. Anthony, Fountain Valley, Eastvale Roosevelt, Gardena Serra, and more. In this piece we take a look at some sleeper prospects whose performances put them on the SoCal basketball map.
LaQwon Cole, Gardena Serra – We first saw Cole as a freshman two years ago at our Skills Summit camp and not only has he made strides as a player from that event, he’s also grown a few inches in that time. Now standing at 6-feet-3, the junior guard played with great patience and a heady feel for the game when on or off the ball. Cole is a shifty ball-handler who did a nice job of getting into the teeth of the defense where he created for himself or others.
Lucas Gray, St. Anthony – Gray is a transfer from Los Alamitos and should be a big part of the Saints success this season. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard showed that he can serve as a pressure-release option for Jayden Bush Jayden Bush 6'0" | PG St. Anthony | 2022 CA-S and Elijah Price Elijah Price 6'8" | PF St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S as opposing defenses will key-in on stopping them offensively. Gray, a senior, is a knockdown shooter from three-point range when his feet are set and when he has time and space.
Tyler Small Tyler Small 6'1" | PG St. Anthony | 2023 State CA-S , Servite – Small continues to improve and solidify himself as one of Orange County’s top guards for his upcoming junior season. The 6-foot-2 point guard brings a scorers mentality to the floor and puts buckets on the board in a variety of ways. Small knocked down plenty of perimeter jumpers on the weekend both off the bounce and catch-and-shoot threes, but his strong frame and willingness to drive strong into the paint and finish through contact is what makes him such a tough cover.
Brady Francis, Esperanza – Esperanza looks to be one of the more improved teams in Orange County and Francis is one of the most important pieces of that squad. The 6-foot-5, class of 2022, wing has a long and wiry frame and excels when getting out in transition and using his athleticism to finish on the break. Francis can also hit catch-and-shoot triples off of kick-outs and is a good slasher and finisher off the ball in the half-court setting.
Dylan Godfrey, Pacifica Christian – Godfrey should see his recruitment pick up this season as he’ll be a feature piece for Pacifica Christian’s offense. The 6-foot-8 senior wing/forward has a pretty jump shot with touch out to the three-point line and he can face-up and knock down a 15-17 foot shot. Godfrey still needs to add some weight to his wiry frame, but he has some back-to-the-basket skill that helps him score on the low block.
