These showcases allow high school teams to implement new changes and get new players acclimated to the team. This past weekend, Garden Grove, CA played host to the Fall Invitational presented by SoCal Academy. I was able to attend the event on Friday, Oct. 1 and here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1. Gabriel Quiette Gabriel Quiette 6'3" | SF Mater Dei | 2022 State CA-S – Mater Dei 2022
Quiette is a player I’ve seen quite a few times now over the years and this version of him is the best yet. He’s become very comfortable with the ball in his hands, much more than I’ve seen before. He’s decisive and uses his agility to get to the rim and draw fouls. He was playing point guard in the game I saw and he was doing a little bit of everything. He was scoring, rebounding and finding open teammates.
2. Oziyah Sellers Oziyah Sellers 6'3" | SG Modesto Christian | 2022 #162 Nation CA-S – SoCal Academy 2022
A USC commit, Sellers is a really good combo guard. He’s got the size and scoring ability to play shooting guard and he’s got the ball-handling, court awareness, and playmaking to be a point guard. He’s very smooth and fluid with the ball in his hands. He can get defenders out of position with ball fakes and get himself open for a jumper. Does a good job pulling up off the dribble.
3. Ariik Mawien – Capistrano Valley 2023
A Pepperdine commit, Mawien is a very athletic wing player. He’s long and mobile and very active around the rim. He crashes the glass well and can start a play in transition off a rebound. He’s a pretty solid ball-handler especially on the break. He can make moves off the dribble in the halfcourt and get to the rim. He’s able to use his length to extend and finish over the defense.
4. Bam Johnson – TMG Prep 2022
Johnson is a player I’ve seen several times now since he was at View Park HS. He’s developed into a very solid point guard and leader. He controls the pace well and can handle defensive pressure. Solid in transition or in the halfcourt. He uses his ball-handling and strength to get into the lane and he’s a smooth finisher at the rim. Can get to the free-throw line. He really locks up defensively too on the wing with strong ball pressure.
