The short season caused many to not play a lot of varsity minutes but this class is a really talented with some players already receiving division 1 offers. Now that we have introduced the initial rankings for the Class of 2024, here is a breakdown of the top guards in the class.
PG 6’2 Marcus Wilson Marcus Wilson 6'2" | PG Bella Vista Prep | 2024 NM , ABC Prep: Wilson will enter his sophomore season as the number one player in the state for his class. An athletic lead guard that can really shot the lights out, and is one of the top playmakers in the southwest will play for Brandon Mason and ABC Prep on the Grind Session as he looks to prove he is one of the top point guards on the West Coast.
SG 6’4 Dylan Chavez Dylan Chavez 6'5" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State #268 Nation NM , ABC Prep: Dylan transfers back to New Mexico from PHH Prep in Arizona, and will play with ABC Prep this year. He is known as one of the top scorers in the southwest in his class, and is working on his playmaking skills as he looks to transition into a point guard. Chavez is the only player in the state with some Grind Session experience, recently received an offer from Montana State University, and has added a little bit of weight, which should help out the team in its first season.
PG 6’2 Daniel Steverson Daniel Steverson 6'2" | SG Cleveland | 2024 State #315 Nation NM , Cleveland: Steverson would be the biggest stock riser if there were rankings released last year, after growing about 6 inches since entering high school, and having a solid impact for the 5A state champions last season. He is a pass first guard, that is a hard nose defender, but is still learning how to use his new found length. He will lead a young Cleveland squad this year, and will look to bring Cleveland back to the state championship before he graduates.
PG 6’0 Cody Vassar-Steen Cody Vassar-Steen 6'2" | PG Farmington | 2024 State NM , Farmington: Cody transferred in from Chicago before his freshman season, and exploded onto the scene leading Farmington in scoring and assists. He has a tight handle, can really get to the basket, and is improving his jump shot. Time will tell how good he gets as the kid really grinds in the gym, but I expect for his name to spread quickly throughout the state over the next two seasons.
CG 5’10 Addonez Garay Addonez Garay 5'10" | CG Rio Rancho | 2024 NM , Rio Rancho: Baray has not seen varsity minutes in Rio Rancho’s system just yet, but should see some opportunities this season as he proved he can hang at that level this summer. A defensive minded guard that has developed his playmaking skills a ton since 8th grade, and doesn’t take too many bad shots. Im intrigued to see how much he grows over the next few years as that will ultimately decide his level of recruitment.
SG 5’9 David Cruz David Cruz 5'9" | CG Las Cruces | 2024 NM , Las Cruces: Cruz is the spot up specialist for the loaded Bulldawgs shooting 46% from beyond the arc. He excels at finding openings in the defense where his teammates can swing him the ball, and watch him knock down shots all game. He will have a similar role this season as Las Cruces loks to win their second state title in three years.
