With 20 teams on three courts including 18 high school teams and two showcase teams, there was plenty of talent across the board and tons of coaches tuned in and in person there to recruit the talent.
Here’s a look at part one of some of the standouts in the 2022 class at session three.
If you’re interested in watching the replays, you can see the entire event on the CBG Live Network.
Alphonzo Billups Alphonzo Billups 6'7" | SF Varina | 2022 State #154 Nation VA | 6’7” WF | Varina
Billups has been great in almost all of the Fall Series sessions, but his game against Miller School might have been the best I have seen him yet. He continues to improve in all facets especially in his shot making ability, he was great in transition with his playmaking ability and finishing ability and as he continues to develop you have to think VCU may have a future star on their hands.
Christian Carden Christian Carden 6'4" | PF Varina | 2022 State VA | 6’5” F | Varina
Another versatile forward for Varina, Carden is an x-factor of a player with his ability to play and guard multiple positions while impacting the game in a number of different ways. He scored it well from the midrange and stretched the floor, he can create space for himself and get to the rim off the bounce and he is a good passer and playmaker too.
Darren Buchanan | 6’6” WF | Woodrow Wilson
Buchanan is one of the best available players on the east coast and he showed why as he was super productive throughout the day averaging 22 points per game in his two games and probably averaging close to a double-double. A high motor and very strong wing, he was able to get to the rim and finish through contact, he made shots from multiple levels, he handled and made plays in transition and he rebounded well on both ends of the floor.
Cam Gregory Cam Gregory 6'5" | CG Steward School | 2022 State VA | 6’2” CG | Steward School
The senior leader of the talented Steward team continues to show why he’s one of the best available guards in the area with his ability to play both backcourt positions and both score it and make plays for others. He’s long and fluid and able to create space off the bounce, he can score it through contact and make shots from multiple levels and he has good feel and instincts on both ends of the floor.
Roman Barshow Roman Barshow 6'6" | PF Steward School | 2022 State VA | 6’7” F | Steward School
Barshow is one of the most underrated prospects in Richmond and he’s been fantastic at the last two sessions of the Fall Series. In their win over Independence, Barshow finished with 15 points and showed that he can shoot it from deep, use his size and athleticism to finish in the paint and in transition and he can guard multiple positions too.
Ryan Blakey Ryan Blakey 5'8" | PG Fairfax Christian | 2022 State VA | 5’9” PG | Fairfax Christian
Fairfax Christian looks like they’re ready to make a run at a state championship this year after going 4-0 in the Fall Series and Blakey is the straw that stirs the drink for them. A dynamic and shifty guard that can fill it up in bunches, Blakey shot the basketball well from deep, got in the lane and broke down the defense and provided great ball pressure for their stifling defense.
Kashawn Cordes Kashawn Cordes 6'4" | SF Hermitage | 2022 State VA | 6’3” WF | John Marshall
Cordes is going to be the x-factor for this talented JM group this year as he has the mix of length and versatility to impact the game in a number of ways. He’s improved a lot in his ability to score it from multiple levels, he has good length defensively to get deflections and bother ball handlers and he can put it on the deck and make plays for others.
Ashton Schoolfield | 6’0” PG | Colonial Forge
Forge came into the final session of the Fall Series as a little bit of an unknown but went 2-0 on the weekend with Schoolfield standing out as a floor general who can run the show and score it when he needs to. He plays with great pace and can handle pressure, he has very good feel for the game and good vision when he attacks and he can score it efficiently both in the paint and from deep.
