With 12 teams on two courts including 10 high school teams, two showcase teams, there was plenty of talent across the board and tons of coaches tuned in and in person there to recruit the talent.
Here’s a look at part one of some of the standouts in the 2023 class at session two. There will be one more session as well on October 24 at U-Turn.
If you’re interested in watching the replays, you can see the entire event on the CBG Live Network.
Yuri Manns Yuri Manns 6'3" | CG LC Bird | 2023 State VA | 6’3” CG | LC Bird
Manns had one of the best showings of anyone in attendance, scoring in double figures both games and averaging 17.5 points per game in their two games including a 23 point performance against Kecoughtan where he only missed three shots in the game. He’s looking much more explosive and assertive on the offensive end as he wanted the ball down the stretch, he is finishing at and above the rim more consistently, he can create and make shots from deep and he has an excellent middle game with a great floater.
Stylz Gardner Stylz Gardner 5'11" | CG Peninsula Catholic | 2023 State VA | 6’0” CG | Peninsula Catholic
Gardner was one of the top scorers in the 757 last season and it’s easy to see why with his crafty ability to score the basketball in so many different ways. A combo that can play on or off the ball, he can really stroke it from deep and gets hot quickly from there, he can put it on the deck and is an excellent finisher through traffic and he can hit tough shots in the midrange as well.
Jay Randall | 6’3” WF | Patriot
Randall was a big reason that Patriot played so well this weekend, as the 6’3” wing was a monster on both ends and brought great energy to his team. He’s long and athletic and thrives in transition where he can play at and above the rim, he has great tools on the defensive end and he always seems to be around the ball whether it’s rebounding or being in the right place at the right time for a bucket.
Reuben McEachern | 5’10” PG | Carmel
McEachern was a bright spot for Carmel on a tough weekend for them, and this is the second straight weekend where he’s played at a high level. He’s a gritty guard who is quick off the bounce and makes plays for himself and others, he is great on the defensive end with good instincts and quick hands and feet and he has a competitive edge to him as well.
Curtis Blair | 6’5” WF | Steward School
Blair had a nasty back injury over the summer and it took a while for him to shake it off, but he looks like he’s getting back to his healthy self and the smooth wing had a number of impressive plays this past weekend. The 6’5” wing has long arms and a prototypical frame, he shoots the ball well from multiple levels but really excels in the midrange area where he can make off balance and contested pull-ups and he has improved his ball skills and decision making with the ball in his hands.
Etienne Strothers Etienne Strothers 6'1" | PG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’1” PG | Menchville
Strothers continues to show improvement and that he’ll be a breakout player in the 757 this season with the ball in his hands and as the go-to guy for a deep Menchville team. He deferred a little more this weekend showing that he can run the show and make plays for others, he can score it when he needs to from multiple levels and he continues to show that he is maturing and making the game easier for himself.
AJ Clark AJ Clark 6'2" | SG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’3” CG | Menchville
Clark is another guy for Menchville that could have a breakout season, and one thing that really stands out is his intensity and playmaking ability on the defensive end. He’s a big time athlete who is fast and moves well laterally, he gets off his feet quick and has good explosion to challenge shots coming help side and offensively he continues to show improvement in his shot making and playmaking ability offensively.
Devin Keasey Devin Keasey 6'4" | SF Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WF | Menchville
Keasey is a player who sometimes gets overshadowed on this Menchville group, but he played very well this past weekend and is a reminder that they have many different scoring options. Keasey’s a smooth wing who can make shots from deep and in the midrange, he has a good frame and can use his strength to bang in the post and he can make tough shots using his size.
