Continue ReadingThe CBG Fall Series returned this past Sunday, October 3 at U-Turn in Richmond and the atmosphere and competition level was fantastic. With 18 teams on three courts including 12 high school teams, 3 post grad teams and 3 showcase teams, there was plenty of talent across the board and tons of coaches tuned in and in person there to recruit the talent.
Here’s a look at part two of the many 2023 standouts at session one. There will be two more sessions as well on October 10 and October 24 at U-Turn.
If you’re interested in watching the replays, you can see the entire event on the CBG Live Network.
Greg Jones Greg Jones 6'5" | SF Hayfield | 2023 State #258 Nation VA | 6’6” WF | Hayfield
Jones was one of the players who took advantage of the CBG platform to make a name for himself, as he was fantastic averaging 14.5 points and showing a terrific feel for the game at his size. He has good size and length as well as being an explosive athlete that can play above the rim, he brings it on both ends of the floor and for a player his size he exhibited terrific vision and passing ability and made the right decision consistently for his group.
David King | 6’3” PF | Hayfield
King is the type of player you have to love if you cover high school basketball because he’s clearly undersized and at a disadvantage at times but he always finds a way to be productive, including scoring 25 points in their close loss to Menchville. He’s a super high motor forward who runs the floor hard and brings it on both ends, he’s always around the ball and is very active and he finishes everything in the paint and at the rim no matter how big his defender is.
DJ Holloway | 6’0” CG | Hayfield
Holloway definitely turned heads in the event with his high flying play as he had multiple highlight worthy slams, and the thing that’s most impressive is that looking at him you wouldn’t guess that at all. He’s an explosive combo guard that uses his speed and quickness defensively to jump passing lanes for steals, he brings toughness on both ends of the floor and when he gets downhill he is a fearless finisher above the rim.
Justin Bass Justin Bass 5'11" | PG Kecoughtan | 2023 State VA | 5’11” PG | Kecoughtan
Bass is one of a number of playmaking guards for Kecoughtan that had a very good day, showing his quickness and shiftiness offensively and making plays on the defensive end as well. He’s a quick and skilled guard that can get in the paint and make plays, he showed improvement on his ability to make shots from deep off the catch and he brought it defensively jumping passing lanes and making ball handlers uncomfortable.
MJ Smith MJ Smith 6'2" | SG Manor | 2023 VA | 6’2” WG | Manor
Manor had a tough weekend dropping two close games to Hayfield and Fairfax Christian, but they had some bright spots including Smith who showed why he’s one of the best scorers in the 757. While his shot wasn’t falling early from deep, Smith showed his ability to go to the post and make tough fall aways, get to the rim and finish tough shots and once he got it going he knocked down some shots from deep and scored in double figures in both games.
Rueben McEachern | 5’10” PG | Carmel Christian
McEachern took full advantage of the tough matchups for Carmel and played with great energy and poised as their lead guard and made tons of plays on both ends of the floor. A gritty lead guard who can run the show, McEachern used his quickness to get steals, get in the lane and finish through traffic and went on runs by himself that gave huge spurts to Carmel.
Aaron Brown | 6’2” WG | Carmel Christian
Brown is a new name to know for Carmel and showed a lot of potential with his mix of strength, athleticism and skillset on both ends of the floor. A tough competitor that brings it every moment he’s on the floor, Brown showed great finishing ability as he got downhill and played through traffic and he showed he can stick it from deep on kick-outs as well.
