With 18 teams on three courts including 12 high school teams, 3 post grad teams and 3 showcase teams, there was plenty of talent across the board and tons of coaches tuned in and in person there to recruit the talent.
Here’s a look at part one of the many 2023 standouts at session one. There will be two more sessions as well on October 10 and October 24 at U-Turn.
If you’re interested in watching the replays, you can see the entire event on the CBG Live Network.
Isaiah Coleman Isaiah Coleman 6'5" | SF Word of God | 2023 State #59 Nation NC | 6’5” WF | National Christian
Coleman stole the show at session one, as the nationally ranked wing continues to show that he is worthy of being a possible top 50 player in the country. The 6’5” wing is a do-it-all kind of player that can play on or off the basketball, he can guard multiple positions and he’s a very explosive athlete around the rim. He plays with a good motor and can score it from all over the court, and the fact that he just keeps getting better is almost scary to think about.
Turner Harris | 6’5” WF | National Christian
Harris is a new name to this already very talented National Christian group, and he was a huge spark for them with his size and athleticism along with his high motor. The 6’5” wing was a mismatch with his ability to get up and down and finish at the rim, he showed he can put it on the deck and get in the lane and he can guard multiple positions too.
Etienne Strothers Etienne Strothers 6'1" | PG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’1” PG | Menchville
The first thing we noticed about Strothers when we saw him is that he just continues to grow and stands as a legitimate 6’1” now, and now that he’s playing with the ball in his hands he’s looking like an excellent playmaker that can both score and make plays for others. He plays with good pace and changes speeds well, he can get in the lane well and either finish at the rim or make a play for someone else and he can stick it from deep as well.
AJ Clark AJ Clark 6'2" | SG Menchville | 2023 State VA | 6’3” CG | Menchville
Clark has always been intriguing with his length and explosive athleticism, but he looks like he’s took a big jump with his improvement, especially on the offensive end. He’s dynamic off the bounce with his shifty handle and ability to get in the lane, he brings it on the defensive end with his ability to stay in front and rise up to contest shots, he can finish at and above the rim and he has improved in his ability to knock down jumpers off the catch and one dribble pull-ups.
Kris Mickens Kris Mickens 6'5" | CG National Christian Academy | 2023 State MD | 6’3” CG | Fairfax Christian
Mickens transferred to Fairfax Christian and reclassified to the 2023 class after spending the last few years at PVI and he’s looking like a very intriguing prospect in that class with his size and athleticism at the guard and wing spot. He’s a natural athlete that is quick off of his feet and can play above the rim, he has tons of potential on the defensive end and his ability to play both on and off the ball makes him very versatile on the offensive end.
Joe Baldwin Joe Baldwin 6'7" | SF Fairfax Christian | 2023 State VA | 6’6” WF | Fairfax Christian
Baldwin is another very intriguing prospect on a talented Fairfax Christian team that went 2-0 this past weekend, and with his size and athleticism he’ll be one to watch as he continues to develop. The 6’6” wing has prototypical size to play at the next level, he’s a natural athlete that thrives in transition and he showed improvement in his ability to make shots from deep and create shots off the bounce.
Rob Glynn | 6’5” F | VA Academy
Glynn is a new name for us to keep an eye on for VA Academy after transferring from Broad Run, and the 6’5” hybrid forward was productive throughout the event and gave a big boost to the VAA team that went 2-0 this weekend. He’s very versatile as a player who can play inside-out, he plays with a great motor and is very physical on both ends and he can play and guard multiple positions making him a mismatch.
