There were about 80 players from five states (NM/CA/CO/NV/AZ) who played three games each with 10 teams of 7-9 players on each team.
I thought there was good depth at every age group and adequate competition on every court.
Let’s take a look at every age group’s 1st team.
Here is the 2023 1st team: (We had multiple players that will see their stock going up due to not being seen in awhile and simply getting better.)
Mark Brown Jr Mark Brown Jr 6'2" | PG Bella Vista Prep | 2023 State AZ Mountain Pointe
A super fast scoring lead guard is quick on quick with the ball in his hands. He shot the ball unusually well for any position from all levels. He hit 3’s off the catch, his pull-up from mid-range was cooking and he got to the rim with euros and pro hops. He is a physical defender on the ball.
Kolin J. Vance Kolin J. Vance 6'5" | SF Paradise Valley | 2023 State AZ Paradise Valley
One of the top athletes at the event had some big time moments. The lefty made shots from the 3pt line with range and takes long strides to the cup and will score it above the rim or he can finger roll it in. He can hesi then burst by his defender to get to basket and he can side step and hit the 3 or pull-up from mid-range. He will make extra passes and defend multiple positions. Stock up!
Michael DeHorney Michael DeHorney 6'8" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State AZ Hamilton
A long forward who is a big time dunker. He has some serious springs for his position and he will rebound in traffic high above the crowd with his length and bounce. He is slowly facing up from the perimeter and runs the court well.
Zaveion Bineyard Zaveion Bineyard 6'7" | PF Verrado | 2023 State AZ Verrado (Pictured)
A newcomer for me has a lot to like. He fights hard inside to rebound at its highest point and he will block shots. He is quick inside to score on floaters and/or runners and he loves facing up from mid to the 3pt line. He can be a little more aggressive at times, but when he puts it all together, watch out.
King Turner King Turner 6'5" | PG North Canyon | 2023 State AZ North Canyon
A long guard is an efficient scorer getting to the basket. He has the floater game and is very crafty around the hoop with a nice layup package. He is a very good passer and is a plus rebounder for his position. He uses his length and size to defend the 1-3. Stock up!
Dalton Graham Dalton Graham 6'7" | SF Sunrise Mountain | 2023 State AZ Sunrise Mountain
A unique point forward was one of the best passers at the event. He scores it inside with multiple moves and he rebounds at a good rate plus he can push rock. Once he pushes the break he can thread the needle and make his teammates better.
Ben Wilder Ben Wilder 6'5" | SF Bradshaw Mountain | 2023 State AZ Bradshaw Mountain
An improving forward can score it from 3pt line mainly off the catch and runs the floor well. Once he gets any kind of runway he can throw it down with sneaky bounce. He is another that is a good passer for position and he should be a stud in Northern Arizona. Stock up!
