There was over 90 junior colleges / prep teams in attendance with over 300 college coaches watching across three days. While I snuck over to watch some Juco basketball from time to time, my main focus was on the SIAA schools in attendance.
These are some of the Guards who stood out to me:
SG T.J. Hurley 6-5 The Rock (2022)
I was looking forward to viewing Hurley person, I had been impressed with film I had watched of him during AAU season. Making the move down to the States from Canada, Hurley is the son of a former college and current high school coach and it’s not hard to tell. He handles the ball well against pressure and gets where he wants to go despite not having blow by speed. He shoots the three at a high clip and has a textbook release. The most underrated part of his game is his passing ability, he sees the floor well and anticipates where his teammates are going to be. In one game I saw, he got hot sinking five 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. With his ability to shoot, pass and dribble, I could see Hurley fitting in well into a Princeton offense. Recruiting wise Fairfield represents his lone scholarship offer.
PG Moses Horne Moses Horne 6'3" | PG PK Yonge | 2023 State FL 6-2 The Rock (2023)
I loved what I saw out of Horne defensively. He has long arms, quick feet and was harassing dribblers every time I saw him with stingy on ball defense. On offense, he handled the ball well, and found his way to the basket often finishing through contact. The lead guard was great in transition finding his teammates, or scoring himself. My first impression of Horne made me come away thinking that he will be one of the top point guards in Florida for his class.
SG Jacob Sterck Jacob Sterck 6'4" | SG Buchholz | 2023 State FL 6-5 The Rock (2023)
Sterck gives The Rock another well rounded High IQ player who can shoot the lights out. He has great size for a shooting guard and made all the right pass vs. shoot decisions. It will be scary if he and Hurley both get hot at the same time………….Sterck’s little brother 6-2 PG Evan Sterck (2025) also showed a lot of promise handling the ball , distributing and scoring against much older competition. We don’t rank Freshmen until after the season but this kid certainly helped his case this past weekend.
SG Kameren Wright Kameren Wright 6'6" | SF Orlando Olympia (FL) | 2024 State #247 Nation FL 6-5 The Rock (2024)
Wright made a lot of noise at Gainesville high as a freshmen last year, and I was glad I was able to catch him for the first time this past weekend with his new team. The wing is an elite athlete, in each game that I saw he caught at least one head turning alley oop dunk. He was impressive as a transition finisher, and did his best work slashing to the basket. He also made a few jump shots, and took pride on defense. The fact that he has three full seasons of High School basketball left to polish his game is a scary thing.
PG Maurice Odom 6-0 West Oaks Academy (2022)
In the lone game I watched West Oaks, I really liked what I saw out of Odom. He’s always looking to push the pace and trying to advance the ball up the floor. The thing that he is best at in my opinion is defense both on and off the ball. He caused havoc all game long poking the ball away from dribblers, and causing havoc in passing lanes. The lead guard also made several impressive passes that led to scoring opportunities for his teammates. Odom should be one of the premier point guards in the SIAA this season.
G/F Fredy Sylla 6-7 Potters House Christian (2024)
Sylla is an absolute stud in the class of 2024. He handles the ball well at 6-7, has all kinds of moves going to the basket and finishes everything near the cup. He also showed that he is capable 3-point shooter knocking down two in the game I watched. It’s still very early, but Sylla will be a nationally known name sooner rather than later.
SG Mykol Sanchez 6-6 Central Point Christian Academy (2022)
Throughout the weekend Sanchez was the most consistent player for CPCA averaging double digits. The wing can flat out shoot both from deep, and the mid range. He has excellent footwork coming off of screens and is dangerous off the catch when he has his feet set. Look for another successful season out of Central Point Christian, and for Sanchez to be a major reason why.
G/F Jalen Carruth Jalen Carruth 6'7" | SF Kingsmen Academy | 2023 FL 6-7 Central Point Christian (2023)
Carruth may have the most long term potential on a team full of scholarship level players. He has great size and length on the perimeter and shoots at a high clip. He has above average athleticism which he showcased on drives to the basket, and finishing in transition. Thus far Carruth has early offers from Xavier, Clemson, Buffalo,Tulsa along with a handful of others.
