It seems in today’s basketball world defense has become an under-appreciated talent with the mixtape culture showing off prolific scorers and dunkers, but defensive guys are often scouts/coaches’ favorite players to watch. Here are our picks for the top two-way standouts who can get it done on both sides of the floor.
Dylan Sanders Dylan Sanders 6'4" St. Mary’s | 2022 CO – Colorado Prep
Dylan Sanders Dylan Sanders 6'4" St. Mary’s | 2022 CO over this spring and summer has made big leaps starting to come into his own as a true combo-guard. Dylan’s knockdown three-point shot has opened up his game a lot as he can also put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim. On the defensive end, he is a lockdown defender with good instinct and quick hands. Many times he starts fastbreaks by jumping passing lanes or picking the pockets of whoever he is guarding. Then on the fastbreak, he is someone defenders do not want to step in front of as he is a high flyer, who has had his fair amount of posterizing dunks. On the offensive end Dylan’s court vision is great, he stands at 6’4 and this helps survey the court for open teammates.
Luke Williams Luke Williams 5'11" Chaparral | 2022 CO – Chaparral
Luke Williams Luke Williams 5'11" Chaparral | 2022 CO is a coach’s player, he’s super scrappy and can play multiple roles on the court. On the defensive end, Luke is a high IQ guard who uses his shorter height to his advantage. Luke gets is a pest and gets underneath players skin, he has super quick hands and is a player who will take advantage of players without tight handles on the ball. Luke can handle the ball very well and is a guy who can go out and get a bucket when asked of him. From three-point land, he has a nice stroke and is a surprisingly good scorer inside, as he has a quick first step he uses to blow by defenders.
Jackson Brennan Jackson Brennan 6'3" | CG ThunderRidge | 2022 State CO – ThunderRidge
Jackson Brennan Jackson Brennan 6'3" | CG ThunderRidge | 2022 State CO is a guy who makes an impact on the game with his hustle alone. Jackson is like a Tasmanian devil on the court, he seems to be everywhere pulling down rebounds, getting steals, or making sneaky cuts to the basket. Jackson is an x-factor type player who can play many roles on the court. Jackson has good height for a shooting guard standing at 6’2, he is also a good athlete which helps him finish at the rim against taller defenders. While he may not lead his team in points he makes momentum-shifting plays, like getting a big fastbreak dunk, an and 1 finish, or locking down on his opponent. Jackson is a good shooting guard who we will be watching a lot with the exciting returning 5A state champs at ThunderRidge.
Kyle Sandler Kyle Sandler 6'7" | SF Hargrave Military Academy | 2022 State CO – Regis Jesuit
Kyle Sandler Kyle Sandler 6'7" | SF Hargrave Military Academy | 2022 State CO is a player who sadly we have not gotten the opportunity to watch much of recently due to injury but his talent is undeniable. Kyle is a small forward with great height standing at 6’6 and has a solid frame which allows him to switch onto bigs down low. With his size and great footwork, he is a guy who can guard 1-4 and smaller centers, and there have been times where we have seen him lock down D1 big men. On the offensive end, Kyle is a great spot-up shooter who you can not leave open from beyond the three-point arc. He is also an underrated passer from the forward position as he has great vision and can draw in the defense to help get his teammates open. We hope to see Kyle back on the floor soon!
