After an unprecedented start to the 2020-2021 season, programs look to get back into their routine for the launch of the 2021-2022 campaign. Prep Hoops will be following along with the 11th and 12th Region top 4 finalists from last season.
East Jessamine Jaguars
2020-2021 Record
12-4 Regular Season
3-1 Postseason (Loss to Boyle County in 12th Region Semi-Final)
Prep Hoops visited with Coach Chewning and attended an open gym. Every player that earns a jersey will have one thing in common: opportunity. The Jaguars lost 8 seniors from the 12th Region semifinalist team; each player was considered a major contributor to the program. This team will have a weekly challenge to be coachable, build chemistry, and find their identity. The summer games gave underclassmen experience against high-level action in quality games including South Warren, Dunbar, and Great Crossing. Every unit on the court will look to be creative with their possessions to score points in bunches and keep teams out of the paint and off the glass. The Jaguars will rely on team-rebounding to get their offense started early.
Top Floor General: Turner Shouse is one of the few returners that occasionally cracked the rotation last season for Coach Chewning. Shouse, the son of Asbury’s Men’s Basketball team, Will Shouse, has all of the traits a coach’s kid should possess. Look for Shouse to use his high basketball IQ to carry the Jaguars early in the season. His teammates will need his leadership to overcome their inexperience, especially early in the season. The Jaguars open the season against tough 11th and 12th region opponents.
Top Returner: Bryson Hubbard is the only other senior on the roster for the Jaguars. Hubbard saw the most game action last season and will have the perfect opportunity to be the scoring leader. Hubbard will need to carry over his hard work from the spring and summer workouts to improve consistency on both ends of the court. With only 4% of the scoring returning from a season ago, Coach Chewning will have lots of schemes to create open looks for his players. Look for Hubbard to be one of the beneficiaries of the revamped offense.
Top Playmaker: Isaiah Daniel will be the straw that stirs the drink if the Jaguars want to be a contender for another district championship appearance. The Jaguars will need their wings and guards to be key contributors to keeping opponents off the glass. Daniel is a sneaky athletic wing that will need to use his skills to create deflections in the passing lanes and track down rebounds. Daniel has a shifty elusiveness to his game that will be an advantage to give himself and his teammates open looks. The Jaguars coaching staff has praised Daniel’s improved shooting consistency in the off-season. Look for Daniel to settle in his new role and give the Jaguars the fighting chance to compete in every contest.
