After an unprecedented start to the 2020-2021 season, programs look to get back into their routine for the launch of the 2021-2022 campaign. Prep Hoops will be following along with the 11th and 12th Region top 4 finalists from last season.
Frederick Douglass Broncos
2020-2021 Record
15-1 Regular Season
4-1 Postseason (Lost to Madison Central in 11th Region Championship Game)
Prep Hoops spoke with Coach Moseley about his team. Going into his second season as the head coach of the Broncos, Coach Moseley respects the hype of the 11th region programs. Moseley had a very successful high school basketball career at Louisville Eastern in the highly competitive 7th region. Playing ball in the Louisville area and now coaching in the Lexington area, he has vast experience in the state’s most competitive gyms. He leads a hungry team that flew under the radar at the start of the season but scratched and clawed their way to the 11th Region Championship game against Madison Central. For the Broncos to stay atop the 11th region standings, look for these players to be major contributors.
Top Returner: Tyson Barrett Tyson Barrett 6'8" | PF Frederick Douglass | 2023 FL , will be on a mission to prove he is a Top 20 player in the state for the class of 2023 and a legitimate candidate for Player of the Year in the 11th region (Updated 2023 Rankings). Barrett is coming off of a very productive spring and summer season with the Cave Gym Elite program. Barrett averaged nearly a double-double last season and will look to take the next jump going into his senior campaign. Early reports show Barrett to be quicker and stronger. Look for Barrett to develop his mid-game and play above the rim on both sides of the court.
Top Playmaker: Kai Simpson Kai Simpson 6'3" | PG Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY , is another athlete that played for Cave Gym Elite for the spring and summer seasons. Simpson made huge strides throughout his sophomore year. With DeShawn Jackson graduating and playing collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University, there will be more opportunities to be aggressive on offense for Simpson. Look for Simpson to become a dynamic playmaker that can turn up the energy on defense. He will need to improve his consistency as the lead guard for the Broncos to have success in the tough 42nd District.
Breakout Player: Shemar ORoy-Ford, is returning for another season and the coaching staff has been encouraged by his development over the off-season. ORoy-Ford is a player that shows flashes of being a dominant athlete but never played at full strength last season. Look for him to have more awareness around the post and be a forceful tandem with Barrett.
Players we will keep an eye on as the season unfolds:
- Tylon Webb Tylon Webb 6'3" | CG Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY , a defensive weapon that will have every opportunity to see his role with the offense increase. Webb is currently playing football for a Broncos team that is expected to make a deep playoff run
- Josiah Lemond, top-ranked PG in the class of 2025 (2025 Rankings: Top PGs)
